South Park's Creators Save a Little Bit of History for All of Us

I have to admit to being a fan of “South Park.”

Among my favorite episodes are the ones with Eric Cartman, when he goes after the hippies, and the Casa Bonita episode.

In that episode, Cartman so wants to be invited to Kyle’s birthday party at Casa Bonita, he kidnaps one of the guests — Butters — so that Kyle will invite him in Butters’ place. But just as they reach the restaurant with all its delights, he’s found out.

Here’s a clip from that episode.

But what many people don’t realize is that Casa Bonita is a real place — a landmark restaurant and entertainment center in Lakewood, Colorado. The first one in the chain was founded 46 years ago, but the Lakewood one is the last one left. That opened in 1974. It became a historic landmark in 2015.

Unfortunately, the lockdowns for the pandemic killed many businesses, and Casa Bonita was one of those places. It went into bankruptcy.

Because it was so iconic, people started an effort to try to save it. Right now, the arcade and gift shop are open with tours of the facility being conducted throughout the day.

Now, in a case of art imitating life, folks very close to Cartman are riding to the rescue to save the beloved restaurant.

“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, appearing with the Colorado governor from his office, announced that they’ve tentatively agreed to purchase Casa Bonita.

“As of about an hour ago, pending bankruptcy proceedings, we’ve come to an agreement with the owner and we’ve bought it,” Stone declared.

This is great news for all who love the place, love the show, love preserving history, and for those that want to fight back a bit from what the lockdowns have taken from us. The pair plan on keeping all the iconic aspects of the place that they remember from when they were younger, but they did say they might try to improve the food, apart from the sopapillas.
