San Francisco Archbishop Rebukes Nancy Pelosi in Scathing Statement

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is fond of declaring herself very pro-abortion stance while still claiming to be a “devout Catholic.”

She was at it again this week, saying that as a “devout Catholic,” five kids in six years was good for her but poor woman deserve taxpayer-funded abortions, because of “fairness.”

“It’s an issue of health of many women in America, especially those in lower income situations, and different states, and it is something that has been a priority for many of us a long time,” Pelosi said. “As a devout Catholic and mother of five in six years, I feel that God blessed my husband and me with our beautiful family, five children in six years almost to the day. But it’s not up to me to dictate that that’s what other people should and it is an issue of fairness and justice for poor women in our country.”

But that set off a top Catholic official in Pelosi’s home district – San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone. The Archbishop didn’t hold back in his official statement about what Pelosi had said.

Let me repeat: no one can claim to be a devout Catholic and condone the killing of innocent human life, let alone have the government pay for it. The right to life is a fundamental – the most fundamental – human right, and Catholics do not oppose fundamental human rights. To use the smokescreen of abortion as an issue of health and fairness to poor women is the epitome of hypocrisy: what about the health of the baby being killed? What about giving poor women real choice, so they are supported in choosing life? This would give them fairness and equality to women of means, who can afford to bring a child into the world. It is people of faith who run pro-life crisis pregnancy clinics; they are the only ones who provide poor women life-giving alternatives to having their babies killed in their wombs. I cannot be prouder of my fellow Catholics who are so prominent in providing this vital service. To them I say: you are the ones worthy to call yourselves “devout Catholics”!

Good for him for standing up for the unborn and the principles of the Church, not to mention taking a public posture, even in the face of the politics. Nice to see someone with moral courage. People look at Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden, who frequently talk about being “Catholic” and if they are unfamiliar with the faith or what insincere people they are, they might think there was some reality to her being pro-abortion and a “devout Catholic.” Nothing could be further from the truth. So it’s good that he clarifies the issue for all to know that she’s not acting in line with the faith.

Will she take the hint, now that he’s made it a public rebuke? Probably not. So we’ll have to see if she continues and/or he moves on to the question of denial of communion if she continues.
