Joe Biden has been receiving a lot of backlash for waiving sanctions related to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

This will afford Russia significant control over EU energy, thus increasing Russia’s political influence. At the same time, Biden has been harming our own energy industry by doing things like killing the Keystone XL Pipeline.

The country’s exports of oil to the U.S. are at an all-time high, reaching almost 750,000 b/d in March, according to International Energy Agency (IEA) data, making Russia the number-three oil exporter to the US. Here at home, U.S. oil production has fallen by 1.715 million barrels from a year ago, so a large part of that void is being filled by Russia.

Joe Biden is the best friend Russia has had in this regard.

CNN’s Dana Bash had Biden’s National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, on to explain why Biden caved on Nord Stream.

Bash asked why they were “giving into Russia on this pipeline?” She quoted House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Michael McCaul (R-TX), “They are testing Biden. And, in my judgment, he failed the test.”

Sullivan tried to completely recast the situation.

“I think this is another area where there’s some kind of misunderstanding rooted in that question. We have, in fact, sanctioned several Russian entities when it comes to Nord Stream II. We waived sanctions only on two. And they were not Russian. It was a German individual and a Swiss company. And the notion there, Dana, is that, when President Biden took office, Nord Stream II was 90 percent complete. That happened under the Trump administration. So, the question to us was, will we go after directly, using our sanctions power, our European allies and friends?”

Now, that’s incredibly deceitful on Sullivan’s part. Nord Stream 2 AG, the company completing the pipeline, is based in Switzerland, but it’s owned by Gazprom, which is majority-owned by Russia. The “German individual” for whom sanctions were waived is Matthias Warnig, a former East German intelligence officer and ally of Putin who leads the company behind the project.

On top of that, notice how Sullivan tries to imply that it’s somehow the fault of President Donald Trump. But Trump always stood against it and fought its completion, which was why it hadn’t yet been completed.

Even Biden himself previously admitted that it would be a bad thing to allow it to be completed.

Here’s what White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on February 16:

“Our position on Nord Stream 2 has been very clear, and it remains unchanged. President Biden has made clear that Nord Stream 2 is a bad deal. It’s a bad deal because it divides Europe, it exposes Ukraine and Central Europe to Russia — Russian manipulation, and because it goes against Europe’s own stated energy and security goals.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) blasted the lie.
