The Misleading Effort to Cancel Chip and Joanna Gaines Over Critical Race Theory

Apparently, someone wanted to try to get folks to cancel Chip and Joanna Gaines.

Here’s the headline blaring out from a story in The Hill: “TV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines donate to campaign against critical race theory in schools.”

The piece notes how the couple, known for their show “Fixer Upper,” donated $1000 to the campaign of Shannon Braun for the school board in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District. Braun is against the teaching of critical race theory in schools.

Oh, no! What evil people! We must drum them off of cable TV. That’s the reaction they seem to be trying to get from folks on the left. As indeed they did.

Here’s a sample.

How could Chip do “what” to his kids? Not indoctrinate them?

There are a few problems with this whole story attacking them, of course.

There’s a big thing missing from the headline. Shannon Braun is Chip Gaines’ sister. He donated money to his sister for her school board campaign. Framing it as “donating to a campaign against critical race theory” is incredibly misleading.

But if they think they’re really going to get a lot of people to cancel Chip and Joanna Gaines because of this, they’re sadly mistaken.

First, there is a clear effort to equate being against critical race theory as somehow being bad or racist, when indeed, the opposite is true. It’s the folks pushing this propaganda nonsense who are, in fact, the racists. CRT promotes a false picture of America, dividing and indoctrinating kids along racial lines. Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of judging by the content of one’s character and not the color of their skin is thrown right out the window. It’s all about race, which is why to oppose it is to oppose racism.

Second, a lot of America already understands this, which is why there are so many campaigns like that of Braun across the country against the teaching of CRT in schools.

Third, anyone who has ever watched the Gaines’ shows knows that being racist would be antithetical to their being, that they are all about embracing people. It’s pretty vile for folks to try to stick them in that box.

Finally, they now have their own network, so they aren’t going to have anyone telling them what to do, so they are free. And indeed, if they are against CRT, like Chip’s sister, more power to them, they’re on the right side of the issue and of history.
