If You Thought Obama Getting the Nobel Was Something, The Latest Nomination Really Sends The Irony Meter Skyward

Now there may have been nobody less deserving than Barack Obama to win the Nobel Peace Prize shortly after he came into office. He had done nothing yet (not that he did anything that could even arguably qualify throughout his time in office). The explanation was rather lame, full of the “hope” of his words (which produced nothing).

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump made significant strides for peace in the Middle East and other areas of the world. He has been nominated multiple times but given the politics of the award, there is no way it was going to go past that, despite the fact that he may have earned it.

But now there may be someone even less deserving than Barack Obama who just got nominated for the 2021 prize. I’m not sure that there could be anymore ironic a nomination for a “peace prize” than Black Lives Matter.

They were just nominated by Norwegian MP Petter Eide, who has represented the Socialist Left party, according to The Guardian.

“Black Lives Matter has become a very important worldwide movement to fight racial injustice,” Eide claimed. “They have had a tremendous achievement in raising global awareness and consciousness about racial injustice.” He argued “they have been able to mobilise people from all groups of society, not just African-Americans, not just oppressed people, it has been a broad movement, in a way which has been different from their predecessors.”

When Eide was asked about the rioting and violence connected to the group, he spun their involvement.

“Studies have shown that most of the demonstrations organised by Black Lives Matter have been peaceful,” he said. “Of course there have been incidents, but most of them have been caused by the activities of either the police or counter-protestors.”

Yeah, no. What a way to excuse the violence.

What he’s missing in his comment is the connection of the violent riots to the BLM. While an Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) shows that only about six percent of the thousands of demonstrations/protests/events were violent (according to that one survey, others might take issue with that), even that still meant there were hundreds of violent riots.

As Heritage explains:

Buried inside the ACLED report, as enterprising journalist Joy Pullmann of the Federalist discovered, are numbers indicating that “of the 633 incidents coded [by the ACLED authors] as riots, 88 percent are recorded as involving Black Lives Matter activists. Data for 51 incidents lack information about the perpetrators’ identities. BLM activists were involved in 95 percent of the riots for which there is information about the perpetrators’ affiliation.”

Eide is basically saying let’s just ignore all those riots with billions in damage, at least 25 dead according to the Guardian (others have higher numbers), law enforcement, former police like David Dorn killed, and hundreds of police injured.

Night after night for months in Portland for example, you had BLM ‘protests’ that were then followed by riots and violent attacks on police, businesses and other people, injuring dozens of law enforcement officers just in that one city alone. In one incident in Chicago that was definitely caused by protesters attacking police with rocks, bottles, fireworks and other items, dozens of officers were injured.

That’s just the stuff this year. If we go back years, we can point to even more violence with cops being shot and killed by BLM protesters.

Should we also note that many of the people killed during this year’s riots were in fact black, from retired police captain David Dorn to little eight year old Secoriea Turner? The rioting didn’t act like their black lives mattered.

Hopefully they don’t bring the prize down any further by taking this move. But I wouldn’t put it past them.

As you would expect, there were some strong reactions to the news.
