As my colleague Kira Davis previously reported, the country group Lady Antebellum “succumbed to the culture chaos” and decided to change their name to “Lady A.”

But in the process of trying to avoid any possibility of offense in the name “antebellum,” they managed to offend another singer big time. Turns out there already was a singer, Anita White, who has been using the name “Lady A” while performing for decades.

The band registered the trademark of the name “Lady A” which they have intermittently used for years in 2011.

The band and the singer sat down to try to work out an arrangement. But it didn’t go over well.

Now the band is suing the the singer, not a good look when you consider the reason they dumped the “antebellum” name to begin with.

But she’s not taking it lying down.

She hit them hard for what they did, “I am not going to be erased,” she said.

Their refusal to come to an agreement that would be respectful of my work and my rights, however, has given me the clarity and the drive to not back down. Black lives, names, experiences, work, art—they all matter. Fellow independent artists have reached out to me to share their stories of name feuds that they lost because they were on the opposite side of big money and privilege. Not only will I not be one of them, but I am hopeful that this fight for what is rightfully mine will help those damaged by this type of bullying and erasure in the past, and that it will prevent it from happening in the future. I will not allow Lady Antebellum to obliterate me and my career so they can look “woke” to their fans.

It’s really hard not to see the irony here and wonder what this band is thinking about. The band wanted to play “woke” but then managed to interfere in this lady’s use of the name which she’s used for over thirty years. They may or may not have the legal leg up on her, but it’s just a bad move.

So instead of just keeping the name Lady Antebellum and explaining there is no racist intent behind the name, they instead changed it to Lady A to virtue signal and have since sued black woman & are now accused of weaponizing their “white privilege.”
