On Friday. the Minneapolis City Council took the first formal step toward abolishing the police department in their city, by voting for a measure to abolish the police, according to the NY Post.
It will ultimately need to go through a process including a vote by city residents in November and the mayor has previously said he’s against the proposal so it remains to be seen if it will succeed ultimately.
But it shows just how radical the city council is. At least that’s when it comes to the security of the citizens of the city.
They’re not so radical when it comes to their own safety.
Turns out three of the members of the city council are actually getting private security details from the companies Aegis and BelCom. Guess who’s paying for that? The citizens of Minneapolis. The city has paid out $63,000 in the past three weeks. The three members – Andrea Jenkins, Phillipe Cunningham and Alondra Cano – have all been in favor of defunding the police.

They claim they have gotten threats, but the police said they hadn’t been informed of any threats, according to Fox 9 although they allow it’s possible reports might have been filed confidentially.
Cunningham said he didn’t want to discuss the threats, Cano didn’t respond to inquiries and Jenkins said the concern was the “large number of white nationalist(s) in our city and other threatening communications.” Jenkins said she hadn’t told the police because she was too busy with the “global pandemic and global uprising” in the wake of the killing of George Floyd.
According to Fox 9, the council didn’t have to approve this because it only has to approve city contracts over $175,000. The mayor traditionally has security provided by a police officer who doubles as a driver, but council members normally aren’t provided any security details. The city said that the amount for the private security was similar to if they had a police detail.
Can we say hypocrites? They seek to deny private citizens the protection they need from all kinds of threats by eliminating the police yet see no problem in having those same citizens pay for security for them. And maybe it’s just me but who’s too busy to tell the police if they’re actually getting threats?
Some people are more equal than others, it appears, when it comes to this city council.
If only the rest of the city was as privileged.

Minneapolis politicians who want to "defund the police" at a time when people are feeling unsafe in the city now have city-funded "private security." Sounds about right. Protection for people in power while average citizens are left vulnerable. When are people going to wake up?? https://t.co/4jNvyWGmpc

The same clowns that voted to disband the Minneapolis police force have hired private security companies to look after them. They can afford to. You can't. https://t.co/CnBrjomK7Q
