The rioters and looters are wreaking a lot of destruction. That destruction cannot be justified by saying one is acting on behalf of George Floyd. Particularly when it involves taking lives, including black lives.

Rioters and killers have already destroyed many black lives, where is the attention for those black lives?

Retired St. Louis police captain David Dorn, 77, was murdered by looters defending the pawn shop of a friend in St. Louis.

From the St. Louis Dispatch:

The Ethical Society of Police, which represents black officers in St. Louis, mourned Dorn as “the type of brother that would’ve given his life to save them if he had to.”

Flowers and a teddy bear sat outside the shop next to a handwritten sign that read, “Y’all killed a black man because ‘they’ killed a black man??? Rest in peace.”

Diane Davis knew Dorn and brought the flowers Tuesday. She said he was like a father to many.

“He was a kind man, he was a great man, he is a missed man,” she said.

He served for 38 years. Tim Fitch, the former St. Louis County police chief, praised Dorn as a “true public servant.” His wife, Ann, is a sergeant with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

What made it even worse was that his murder was filmed on Facebook Live, with a young man pleading with him on the sidewalk not to die and then chastising the looters that they would kill him just to steal some TVs.

One of those who saw it is state Rep. Rasheen Aldridge, D-St. Louis. He told the Post-Dispatch that he was shaken by it.

“Very traumatized right now,” he said in a message to a reporter.

President Donald Trump praised Dorn and his family.

“Our highest respect to the family of David Dorn, a Great Police Captain from St. Louis, who was viciously shot and killed by despicable looters last night. We honor our police officers, perhaps more than ever before. Thank you!”

His son, Brian Powell, praised his father, “The fact that he was protecting and serving, this is the way, I feel in my heart of hearts that he would have liked to leave this earth,” said Dorn’s son, Brian Powell in an interview with KMOV4. He said his father often checked on the pawn shop of his friend.

“It was senseless, it was senseless. Over TVs and stuff that’s replaceable,” Powell said. “They’re forgetting the real message of the protest and the positiveness that’s supposed to come out of it. And we get this negative light shown on a situation that really needs light to be brought to it.”

Powell said his father was beloved by all. […]

Dorn’s family is hopeful the shooter comes forward, but Brian Powell said his father would want them to practice forgiveness.

“My dad wouldn’t be mad, he’d try to give them another chance,” Brian Powell said.

That says everything about Dorn as well as the strength and grace of his family. His life and theirs matter.

Dorn is the second officer or retired officer killed, both of whom were black. Patrick Underwood, 53, who was a Federal Protective Service officer, was assassinated while protecting the federal courthouse in Oakland, California during a protest. Another officer was wounded in the attack.
