As we reported Thursday night, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appears to have the votes he needed to block extending the trial and calling new witnesses.
Democrats needed four Republicans to flip in order to have the votes for witnesses. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) weighed in last night and said they would be voting yes on witnesses. But Lamar Alexander (R-TN) said he would be a no, thus seemingly closing the door on the question. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said she was going to sleep on it and announce her decision today.
But when McConnell came into the Senate this morning, it was clear he believes has the votes to shut down impeachment today from the three words he told media.
“Big day today,” @senatemajldr Mitch McConnell tells me as he arrives at his Senate office for the day. #impeachment @ABCPolitics

That sounds like Schiff and his crew are not going to be very happy. You can already see it stacking up, with media melting down and people throwing out last gasp ideas.

Come on, Republicans, don’t be taken in by last-minute gambits, bring it home!
