One of the hallmarks of our American society is the acceptance and orderly transition of power. At least that was the tradition of this country. Until 2016.

While there certainly have been people who were unhappy with the results of the election, sometimes even thinking there was something wrong with the election, no party has ever before encouraged a formal effort to take out the duly-elected president because their side lost.

It should shock and disturb everyone. This is turning norms on their head and tearing down an essential fabric of our nation. Yet this has been ongoing since 2016.

Attorney General William Barr blasted such efforts in a speech to the Federalist Society where he accused the left of tearing down American constitutional norms to sabotage the Trump administration.

“Immediately after President Trump won election, opponents inaugurated what they called ‘The Resistance,’ and they rallied around an explicit strategy of using every tool and maneuver available to sabotage the functioning of his administration,” Barr told the conservative audience.

“The fact of the matter is that, in waging a scorched-earth, no-holds-barred war of ‘resistance’ against this administration, it is the Left that is engaged in the systematic shredding of norms and the undermining of the rule of law,” he added.

He so gets it.

“Now, ‘Resistance’ is the language used to describe insurgency against rule imposed by an occupying military power. It obviously connotes that the government is not legitimate,” Barr said. “This is a very dangerous — indeed incendiary — notion to import into the politics of a democratic republic.“

Instead of seeing themselves as the “loyal opposition” as parties have for over 200 years, Barr noted, the left essentially sees themselves as being in a war to take Trump out, the duly elected government, by any means necessary.

Fortunately, it appears that Barr sees himself as the person who will stand against this upending of the norms and uphold the rule of law. We are so fortunate that he is in office at this time.

The left realizes he gets them, he’s not afraid of them, so they’ve tried to damage him but he basically fluffs them off and stays on focus.
