Julian Castro is wallowing at the bottom of the Democratic primary presidential polls, desperate to find a way to qualify for the next debate and raise his profile.

On Monday, he tried a political stunt.

He attacked President Donald Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, went to Mexico and brought 12 asylum seekers waiting there back across the border at Brownsville, Texas, along with their lawyers. The migrants he brought back included a deaf woman, three members of her family and eight LGBT people.

“This Remain in Mexico program is a complete disaster,” Castro said, according to the LA Times. “People should not be living like this.”

“This president has helped create a humanitarian crisis,” the Democrat added. “People are living in squalor.”

The migrants accompanied by Castro said they have suffered harassment and harm while waiting in Mexico.

A lesbian woman who only wanted to be known publicly by her first name, Melisa, 27, told the LA Times that “she was hit in the face by a stranger as she stood talking to friends outside a nearby pharmacy.”

Mari, a 24-year-old lesbian, said she and her partner Dany have been called names at the migrant camp. “The same people who are living with us discriminate against us,” she said.

But this isn’t even a new political stunt.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) tried a similar stunt earlier walking women across the border at El Paso. That didn’t do much to move the needle for him either as far as poll numbers.

Castro claimed that the people he brought over were entitled to an exception because of their status and “vulnerability.” The “Remain in Mexico policy” allows consideration for people who may face credible danger.

However, Castro’s efforts were all for naught.

The 12 people were all returned to Mexico later in the day after Castro left.

Nothing prevents people from applying to come to the U.S. legally, they simply don’t want to wait in line behind anyone else.

And if being gay allows someone asylum then watch out for the floodgates of gay folk from every country to flood Mexico and try to get in to the United States. Bottom line is Mexico isn’t Iran and people are not getting killed for being gay or facing political persecution, the requirement for asylum.

You’re also not required to wait at the border, you can leave any time.

The “Remain in Mexico” policy, along with the deal with Mexico and improvements/additions to the border wall, has been very successful.

There’s been a huge drop in arrests at the border in the last few months since both went into effect. According to the Border Patrol, there’s been a 43 percent drop from May to August in San Diego, and it’s down 56 percent nationally.

But it’s exactly because the policy and the other efforts by the president have been so successful that Democrats like Castro are fighting it.
