The Internet era of video games has been a revolution. In the old days, video game records were mostly accepted on faith. Live referees, no recordings, and no Internet meant you just had to take people’s word for it. Well, it’s coming out that a lot of people were liars.

One of those liars is Billy Mitchell, the guy a lot of people loved to hate in The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, also known as “Silly Bitchell” thanks to the indefatigable Roy “Mr. Awesome” Shildt.

Mitchell was best known for his “perfect run” of Pac Man, until the King of Kong brought him into fame for his Donkey Kong records. However careful investigation has revealed that several of his scores were faked.

The proven fakery caused people to go to Twin Galaxies, a leading video game competition website, to try to get his records removed. After weeks of pressure, they’ve announced that Mitchell will be purged from the site with a strongly worded statement.

Based on the complete body of evidence presented in this official dispute thread, Twin Galaxies administrative staff has unanimously decided to remove all of Billy Mitchell’s’ scores as well as ban him from participating in our competitive leaderboards.

….we know for certain that an unmodified original DK arcade PCB did not output the display seen in the videotaped score performances…

With this ruling Twin Galaxies can no longer recognize Billy Mitchell as the 1st million point Donkey Kong record holder. According to our findings, Steve Wiebe would be the official 1st million point record holder.

Busted. Fans of the documentary may be glad to know that after all these years, justice will prevail.
