Governor Rick Scott threw himself onto the Trump Train early, but as Donald Trump’s popularity is mixed in the state, can he win himself a Senate seat?

Scott won two terms as Governor of Florida, and cannot run for a third term. So instead he’s considering running to challenge Democrat Bill Nelson for Senate this year. In fact Donald Trump has encouraged Scott to run.

We can see why he’s not sure though. Despite winning two elections to serve as Governor, and despite Trump winning the state in the Presidential election, he’s starting off behind against Bill Nelson. Both University of North Florida and Mason Dixon came out with polls this week, and both have Scott behind, 48-42 and 45-44 respectively.

In fact since polling of this matchup began in April of 2017 (a few months after Trump urged Scott to run), only once has Scott managed to lead. That was when the Florida Chamber of Commerce commissioned a poll, and they’ve signaled a desire to see Scott win.

If Scott runs, he’s going to have to campaign from behind.
