Speaking solely from a pragmatic point of view, this does not exactly sound like a sensible decision on Rep. Gary Peters’ part:
LANSING – Today Rep. Gary Peters set his Washington DC legal attack dogs out to intimidate and silence Julie Boonstra, a Michigan mother battling leukemia who had the courage to speak up after the insurance plan she liked was cancelled due to the Affordable Care Act.
Instead of listening to Julie’s concerns, Peters took steps to strong-arm Michigan television stations to simply pull “Julie’s Story” from the airwaves. These are desperate political tactics from someone who is increasingly incapable of defending his support for Obamacare.
After all, if you listen to the ad…

…the following is pretty much established fact:
- Julie Boonstra has leukemia.
- She had a plan that she liked.
- She lost it.
- She doesn’t think that her alternative options are acceptable*.
- But back to the previous point: she was told that she could keep her plan.
- She lost it.
- Gary Peters voted for Obamacare, and Obamacare is the reason why Julie Boonstra lost her plan.
I am uncertain why the Peters campaign thinks that attacking a woman who has leukemia – and make no mistake; they’re calling her a liar in this cease-and-desist letter – will make people like their candidate better.

*As near as I can tell, this is the only point that a bunch of Beltway liberals and professional Left-pundits are even trying to contest. Because, of course, people like Glenn Kessler and Rachel Maddow are much better suited to determine whether some mouthy woman from the middle class has gotten proper coverage or not. Even if said woman does have leukemia, and would very much like to have some certainty about her health care plan.
And that’s what this boils down to. Julie Boonstra was already afraid that she would die before her time. Now she gets to add to that fear extra terror and uncertainty about her even being able to fight her cancer. And Gary Peters put her in that position. And every elitist apologist who has spent the last few days trying to smack this woman down because of a Senate seat in Michigan needs to go look in a mirror for a while and ask themselves just where they went wrong with their lives.
They won’t, but they should.
