Knife-Wielding Man Shot After Charging NY Cop — Mamdani Demands Mental Health Care, Not Criminal Charges

As self-declared democratic socialist (read: "Marxist") Zohran Mamdani's mayorship of New York City continues its disastrous start, the 34-year-old mayor on Wednesday stuck his radical-leftist nose into a volatile police action that ended with an NYPD officer shooting a possibly delusional, knife-wielding man as he allegedly charged the officer, despite multiple orders to drop the weapon.

Mamdani's take on the situation?

In the *compassionate* mayor's mind, the suspect needs mental health treatment — not criminal charges and time in prison. I'm not sure if this is an example of the mayor's much-ridiculed "warmth of collectivism," but nevertheless, it's not only insane; it also opens the door to future violent suspects avoiding justice under the law. You know, "social justice."

In other words, business as usual in a Democrat-controlled city, which raises the question:

What could possibly go wrong? Plenty.

Here's more:

The New York City Police Department released body camera footage showing the moment an officer shot a mentally ill man who was allegedly charging him with a knife amid calls from Mayor Zohran Mamdani for mental health treatment instead of criminal charges.

Jabez Chakraborty, 22, was holding a large kitchen knife and charged at officers who responded to an emergency call from his family in Queens on Jan. 26, according to the NYPD.

The footage, released by the NYPD on Tuesday, shows an officer entering the living room of the home, where Chakraborty was allegedly brandishing a knife. Officers are heard attempting to de-escalate the situation, repeatedly ordering him to "put the knife down," but Chakraborty continued to move toward the officer, according to the NYPD.

According to the NYPD... [he] stepped toward the officer with the knife.

The officer discharged his weapon, hitting Chakraborty four times. He was taken to the hospital, where he remains in intensive care in stable but critical condition.

So many questions, yet in Mamdani's mind, there's only one right answer (emphasis, mine):

In viewing this footage, it is clear to me that what Jabez needs is mental health treatment, not criminal prosecution from a district attorney, and we are talking about a family that is enduring the kind of pain that no family should and an individual that has lived with schizophrenia for many years.

A person experiencing a mental health episode does not always have to be served first or exclusively by a police officer. It is important for us to have all of the options available.

Mind-numbingly naive, dangerously and stubbornly ignorant, or both?

Anyone who has watched even a few episodes of Cops is well aware that situations like this can be volatile and unpredictable, and that law enforcement must react very quickly, which sometimes means making life-or-death decisions in a split second.

Yet, the wet-behind-the-ears leftist mayor would have New York City denizens believe that he knows best, which is not only laughable but also potentially puts the safety of innocent people at risk when wrong decisions are made.

It might sound harsh, but, in my not-so-humble opinion, Mamdani cares far more about potential criminals than their potential victims. Then again, that's one of the foundational tenets of today's Democrat Party.

Mamdani of course chose to meet with the family of Chakraborty, rather than the people who were likely traumatized by his knife-wielding episode.

To be fair, the mayor also thanked the police officers for risking their lives, although if he had had his way, law enforcement might very well not have responded to the incident at all. Rather, a couple of social workers, healthcare specialists, or whoever would have shown up, theoretically to diffuse the situation. Again, what could possibly have gone wrong?

It Gets Crazier

Chakraborty’s family on Wednesday issued a statement in which they predictably accused law enforcement of "escalating unnecessarily." Yes, really.

As the family apparently saw it, a police officer on the scene, issuing lawful commands, and then shooting a suspect when faced with a deadly weapon wasn’t a  split-second decision; it was “escalation.”

The family is now demanding that the Queens DA drop all charges and that the NYPD release additional body-cam footage. After all, on Planet Mamdani, the extra camera angles will *prove* that armed police should've just butted out.

Meanwhile, the Mamdani madness is sure to continue.
