Recovering Trump Assassination Attempt Victim Has 'Sad,' Passionate Message for America

On July 13, while addressing a crowd at a campaign rally, a former president of the United States and the 2024 Republican presidential nominee survived an assassination attempt that would have likely taken his life if he hadn't inexplicably turned his head to the right. That was and remains profound.

Yet, in today's America, the attempt on Donald Trump's life has been politicized like no prior attempt — successful or not — on the life of a president, presidential candidate, or former president in the history of this country.

Will We Ever Know the True Motive of the Man Who Tried to Kill Trump?

James Copenhaver, one of the two victims critically wounded in the assassination attempt, is "sad" about the "political division" in the country, according to attorney Joseph Feldman, who spoke on Copenhaver's behalf while Copenhaver continues to recover.

Feldman told Fox News Digital on Wednesday:

Overall, he just wants people to understand how unnecessary it was and that the political divide in this country has become so great [that] people are literally willing to attend rallies where people are exercising their First Amendment rights and start firing bullets into crowds.

With due respect to Mr. Copenhaver, the political division in the country is way beyond "unnecessary." It is destructive on multiple levels. It is obscene, and it's likely going to get worse before it even has a chance of getting better.

Feldman talked about Copenhaver's lifelong perspective of America.

He's 74 years old. He's been around a long time. He's witnessed a lot take place in this country. And this is definitely one of the worst things that he's experienced as an American, and he wants people to understand that it does not have to be like this.

Again, with due respect, there are — and have always been, throughout recorded history — things that don't "have to be like this." In untold numbers of examples, those who seek to destroy the status quo intentionally create or cause things that don't "have to be like this." That is exactly what we are now seeing from the rabid left.

Feldman said Copenhaver remains an unabashed Trump supporter.

[He] is unafraid to voice his support for Trump, and he will not allow those who disagree with his views to silence him or prevent him from exercising his rights.

He also shared the details about Copenhaver's memory of the assassination attempt as it happened.

He had almost heard or even seen something kind of whizz past them, which we're assuming is a bullet. And he … looked down at his arm and … felt pain initially, but he didn't even realize that he had been shot a second time at that point. He had mentioned that he was in quite a bit of shock at that time. There was a lot of pandemonium. People were screaming. No one really quite knew what was going on right away.

I have no words here.

Feldman said Copenhaver felt like he was talking to a friend when describing his phone call with the former president after the incident.

It was a very pleasant conversation. He had mentioned it was almost like [Trump] was there in the room with him. He was like talking to a friend … just someone who's able to keep a conversation going. So, a very fluid conversation. He really enjoyed the phone call overall, and we're hoping that, at some point, he could share another phone call or maybe even a visit in person.

Eerily ironic, before Copenhaver was shot, he videoed the would-be assassin getting into position. The video went viral on social media on Wednesday.
