So who'd a thunk that nearly one-third of Democrats would ever agree with Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene about anything? Welp, gang, pigs have flown — kind of.

The Republican firebrand called for a "national divorce" in February 2023, citing the "sick and disgusting woke culture" of "traitorous" Democrats.

Democrats at the time laughed off the call of MTG and other Republicans to divide the nation, but a substantial percentage of Democrat voters now agrees on a split — albeit for totally different reasons, of course.

A new survey of 2,008 voters conducted by the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia found that 31 percent of Biden supporters want Democratic-controlled states to secede from the U.S. and form their own country.

On the Republican side, the survey found that 41 percent of voters who support Donald Trump's candidacy support secession, as well.

The Center's analysis noted:

Disturbingly, nearly one-third (31%) of Trump supporters and about a quarter (24%) of Biden supporters at least somewhat agree that democracy is no longer a viable system and that the country should explore alternative forms of government to ensure stability and progress.

That notion is ridiculously naive on its face. 

The survey also found:

• A majority of both Biden (70%) and Trump (68%) voters believed electing officials from the opposite party would result in lasting harm to the U.S.
• Roughly half (52% Biden voters, 47% Trump voters) viewed those who supported the other party as threats to the American way of life.
• About 40% of both groups (41% Biden voters, 38% Trump voters) at least somewhat believed that the other side had become so extreme that it is acceptable to use violence to prevent them from achieving their goals.

Toss-up Election?

While the survey found that in a head-to-head election, Biden leads Trump by four points —52 percent to 48 percent — a CNBC survey released on Wednesday found Trump leading Biden by 4 points, 46 percent to 42 percent. 

The Bottom Line

It doesn't take an Einstein to envision the myriad of new confrontations that would occur in a "politically divorced" America. From natural resources to the production of goods and services to technology, finance, and beyond, would it be a stretch to envision political disagreement impacting trade between red states and blue states?

I think not.

And other than the silly satisfaction of picking up one's ball and going home after a final hissy fit, what benefits would the divided states possibly receive? Other than zero, I mean. 

Hyper-partisanship is one thing; political stupidity is quite another. 

Until even a semblance of civility and compromise — not to be confused with Congressional Republicans folding up like cheap suits —returns to national politics, here we will continue to find ourselves.
