It was only matter of time. In the minds of the detractors of the Washington “Redskins,” it is well past time — that name’s gotta go. The sooner the better. And this time, it’s going to happen.
While the team has been under pressure from the usual suspects to change the “racist” name for several years, the “social justice” reality in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death has made it clear that it was only a matter of time before the clamor kicked into high gear — in earnest.
As reported by NBC News, team owner Dan Snyder said in a statement released on Friday that the organization will “undergo a thorough review of its name.”
“In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name. This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks.
Snyder added that while he wants to take into account the “proud tradition and history of the franchise,” he also wants to include input from the community and the National Football League.
Let’s translate.
There is zero chance that at the end of the thorough review, Snyder will issue another statement, saying: “After a thorough review, we have decided that the name “Redskins” is just fine. Therefore, no change to the name will be made.”
There is also zero chance that the Redskins community is going to support a change to the name of their beloved ‘Skins, and zero chance that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell — who has recently fallen all over Black Lives Matter and condemned “systemic racism,” as we reported — won’t pressure Snyder to change it — if necessary.
Following the team’s statement, Goodell issued a statement of his own.
In the last few weeks we have had ongoing discussions with Dan and we are supportive of this important step.

It appears that head coach Ron Rivera has already come to a conclusion. After Snyder’s announcement, he said in a statement:
This issue is of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our military.
The announcement by Snyder of the “thorough review” comes a day after FedEx, which owns the naming rights to the stadium where the Redskins play, confirmed it had asked the team to change the name. FedEx CEO Fred Smith owns a minority stake in the team.
Also on Friday, Redskins sponsor PepsiCo announced that it had made a formal request to the team to change its name, as well. NBC News reported that FedEx and PepsiCo, along with Nike, were given an ultimatum by a powerful group of shareholders and investment groups:
One week after a group of shareholders and investment groups worth a combined $620 billion reportedly threatened to end their relationships with Redskins sponsors PepsiCo, FedEx and Nike if the team didn’t change its name, all three companies have made steps toward pressuring Washington to do so.
Bottom line:
Goodbye Redskins, hello some watered-down “compromise” name that will satisfy investors that the Social Justice Warriors and Roger Goodell’s pandering NFL are satisfied, but leave Redskins fans furious.
In today’s environment, the old adage, “it’s all about the fans” only rings true if “social justice” does not snuff it out.
Speaking of which, memo to fans of the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Golden State Warriors, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Black Hawks, and Edmonton Eskimos: Your time is coming. Soon.
