In a bizarre interview, the Sudanese man who claimed to be Meriam Ibrahim’s brother and accused her of apostasy (becoming a Christian) at her trial tells CNN that “potions” turned her into a Christian.  He also claims that she is “bewitched.”

Nevertheless, he says that “if she refuses [to recant her Christian faith and return to Islam,] she should be executed.”

The fact that a Sudanese court relied on the testimony of this man at her trial in convicting and sentencing Meriam to death for her Christian faith is astounding.

Sudan would be executing this woman merely because of her religious beliefs on the testimony of someone who is literally claiming that a magic potion is to blame for her conversion to Christianity.

With the world’s attention focused on Sudan, it must reverse this ruling and release this woman.

These new revelations also make it incumbent upon the Obama Administration and the U.S. State Department to protect the two young American children languishing in prison alongside her.

The Obama Administration can no longer rely on Sudan’s sham court rulings and interpretation of Shariah law and continue refusing to recognize that these children are U.S. citizens.  The case against Meriam is clearly a fabrication, the trial a charade, and her conviction and sentence inhumane.  To allow her two children – 20-month old Martin and newborn infant Maya, both U.S. citizens through their American father, Meriam’s Christian husband – to rot in a Sudanese prison is a travesty and a disgrace.

We cannot remain silent as this woman faces death for her faith and her American children suffer.

I quoted Dietrich Bonhoeffer in another context earlier this week, but his poignant words are equally true here: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”  What Sudan is doing to this woman and her kids is truly evil.
