SMH.  Stupidity magnified.

Max Fisher, one of vox.com’s favorite fictionists, attributed the gesture of raising your hands (as in surrender or non-aggression) to Ferguson, no matter where in the world, no matter what reason.

Hong Kong’s protesters are using the same “hands up, don’t shoot” gesture used in Ferguson.

I’d be willing to guess that the majority of protesters in Hong Kong, who have a real reason to be upset with their Chinese masters, are like the 22-year-old Fisher quoted:

One 22-year-old protester told Quartz’s Lily Kuo that she had never heard of the events in Ferguson.

He goes on to backtrack further:

Another said that the similarity was coincidental, a result of protest leaders telling people to raise their hands to police to signal peacefulness. Still, Hong Kongers pride themselves on being plugged in to the world, so it is within the realm of possibility that some of them followed the events in Ferguson and are now appropriating the gesture for their own use, even if only subconsciously.

Subconsciously?  When dancers do “jazz hands”, when Pentecostal worshippers raise their hands, it’s “within the realm of possibility” that’s subconsciously in support of Ferguson.  Lloyd Christmas has more of a chance.  It’s within the realm of possibility that Fisher is an imbecile.

Beyond the accusation of “stupidity clicks” (an interesting concept, also known as trolling for dollars), Fisher’s pretense denigrates the very real issues going on in Hong Kong, as China gets cold feet about its commitment to full democracy there.  This is an issue worth following, and worth the blood spilled in Tianamen Square.  Trolling a headline is not only promoting an asinine lie, it’s also racist.  Fisher insinuates that somehow Chinese youth in Hong Kong are incapable of handling their own liberty, and must look to America (an America for which President Obama apologized) for their symbols and methods.

When will Ezra Klein wise up and rid himself of his flea infestation that does little except invent new ways to be stupid in public?  Sadly, probably no time soon.
