Liberty University Board Member Slams Fallwell Jr.'s Endorsement of Trump

Mark DeMoss, who chairs the executive committee of Liberty University’s Board of Directors, has decided to break his silence about Jerry Falwell, Jr.’s controversial endorsement of Donald Trump. DeMoss says that Fallwell’s endorsement of Trump is inconsistent with Christian values and has placed the reputation of the entire university in jeopardy.

For many years, Mark DeMoss served as the elder Falwell’s chief of staff and considered the televangelist to be a second father, according to the Washington Post. Now DeMoss is speaking out, saying not only that Falwell’s endorsement was a mistake, but also claiming to be “concerned” for Liberty, which Falwell took over when his father passed away in 2007.

“Donald Trump is the only candidate who has dealt almost exclusively in the politics of personal insult,” DeMoss argued. “The bullying tactics of personal insult have no defense — and certainly not for anyone who claims to be a follower of Christ. That’s what’s disturbing to so many people. It’s not Christ-like behavior that Liberty has spent 40 years promoting with its students.”

“I’ve been concerned for Liberty University for a couple of months now, and I’ve held my tongue,” DeMoss said. “I think a lot of what we’ve seen from Donald Trump will prove to be difficult to explain by evangelicals who have backed him. Watching last weekend’s escapades about the KKK, I don’t see how an evangelical backer can feel good about that.”

DeMoss is trying to be polite in light of an ongoing relationship that he clearly has to maintain with Fallwell, Jr. I have no such ongoing relationship so let me be more blunt: Falwell’s endorsement of Trump, who is manifestly the least Christian candidate of either major party in the last 100 years, is an absolute embarrassment to a once proud University and is conclusive proof that Liberty University is in the hands of a man with compromised judgement.

If you’re an evangelical parent looking for somewhere to send your kid secure in the knowledge that they will get a good Christian education, you have to pretty much rule out a university whose President has his head up the rectal canal of an odious figure like Donald Trump, especially if you’re a reasonably well educated person yourself (and thus can afford Liberty’s tuition). At the end of the day, we might see this whole scandal force a change of leadership at Liberty, especially if the Trump campaign continues to descend into farce.
