Passage of the pro-union “PRO Act” would turn the “Green New Deal” into a “Blue-Green New Deal,” says Communist Party USA organizer.
Last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff (and the man who recruited the then-28 year old bartender to run for Congress), Saikat Chakrabarti, unveiled the real underlying reason for the so-called Green New Deal, reported the Washington Post,
The underlying purpose of the Green New Deal was not to combat “climate change,” per se, but the ability to fundamentally transform the U.S. economy.
“The interesting thing about the Green New Deal,” Chakrabarti stated, “is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all. Because we really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.”
In June, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) passed a resolution endorsing the Green New Deal, stating (in part) “…the Green New Deal aligns with our values and presents an unprecedented opportunity to unite the fights for environmental, racial, and economic justice and make inclusive prosperity and economic security available to all of us by calling for a fundamental reshaping of our economy.”
Given that the so-called Green New Deal’s underlying premise is to fundamentally transform the economy of the United States, it should come as no surprise that the Communist Party USA—which has been growing in the last few years—sees a golden opportunity to use labor legislation currently in Congress to get the Green New Deal passed.
If the left succeeds in getting the labor legislation passed, so the logic goes, then the rest of their Marxist agenda will fall into place.
Writing in the Communist publication People’s World, Rich Nagin—a district organizer for the Communist Party USA—says that passage of the misleadingly-named Protecting the Right to Organize Act “would open the door for passage of bills to protect retirement security, immigrant rights, voting rights, and equality for women and the LBGTQ community.”
While there are several key components to the “PRO Act,” three core components are:
- The PRO Act would eliminate employees ability to vote on unionization through secret-ballot elections;
- The PRO Act would force employees and their employers into government-mandated union contracts after three months of becoming unionized; and
- The PRO Act would eliminate so-called Right-to-Work laws in all 50 states, thereby forcing millions of union members to pay union fees or be fired from their jobs.
A decade ago, when unions and their political allies were trying to pass a similar billed (the “Employee Free Choice Act), the actual motives were better concealed.
However, today, with the shift of the Democratic Party more towards the left, there is more transparency to their goals.
Passage of the PRO Act “would greatly increase the political power of organized labor, restore its declining membership, and put it in a position to play a decisive role in winning all kinds of progressive legislation, including worker protections in a GND,” according to Nagin. “It would turn the GND into a ‘Blue-Green New Deal.'”
