Woman in $400k Viral 'Homeless Veteran' GoFundMe Scam Sentenced to Prison

Social media has increased the amount of viral moments we see these days, and it has also sped up our news cycle. There are tons of internet sensations who seemed at one time to be everywhere, now forgotten under a heap of subsequent sensations.

Remember “Chocolate Rain?”

Or what about “Chewbacca Lady?”

You may also remember a viral story from a few years ago in which a homeless man gave his last $20 to help a couple stranded on the side of the road in Philadelphia. It was an instant sensation, a tale of kindness between strangers, one of them being homeless and in great need himself . Katelyn McClure and Mark D’Amico said they came across homeless veteran Johnny Bobbit Jr. when they were in a moment of need and he didn’t hesitate to help them. They reported the encounter on social media and instantly became a media sensation. McClure and D’Amico set up a GoFundMe page on behalf of Bobbit Jr. and pledged to use any money raised to get him back on his feet. They raised almost $400 thousand dollars and appeared on multiple television and radio shows, including Good Morning America.

There was just one problem…they made up the entire thing.

It all fell apart when Bobbit Jr. came forward to admit the scam, saying his partners in crime ended up scamming him too. The struggling veteran says he only received about $70 thousand of the entire GoFundMe haul. The trio was charged with theft by deception and Bobbit Jr. received a five year special probation on condition of attending a drug treatment program. D’Amico was ordered to pay restitution and received a five year sentence. He is currently serving his time in a New Jersey prison.

That leaves McClure, who this week was finally sentenced to one year and a day in prison plus three years probation. Her lessened plight may have been aided by the recordings she made of D’Amico verbally abusing her and threatening her to keep quiet about the scam.

If you haven’t caught up on this case, you should. It’s more than just a hoax. The conniving couple was undone by an abusive relationship, pride and loose lips.

But at least America was entertained for fifteen minutes.
