Ex-NFL lineman and sportscast host Marcellus Wiley delivered an incredible rant on his show on Thursday afternoon. The Speak For Yourself host took up the controversy of LeBron James’ comments on the recent police shooting of a knife-wielding suspect in Columbus.
Wiley admonished James for jumping into the fray of political discussion too soon, considering the influential nature of his unique platform.
I want to actually pray that his profoundness…will one day match the power of his platform
He should have passed in this moment. Wait for it to come and then you’ll be able to see things clearer. But this is what happens when you want to be first, not right.
He went on to say that the desperation for “likes” and clicks on social media drives instantaneous reactions that too often contain no real thought. Lebron James is well-intended, and, in fact, does much good for many people and should be commended for it, but he failed to stop and ponder the bigger picture before he rendered a public opinion.
I don’t care how smart you are if you don’t stop and think. LeBron James, he failed in that moment.
Wiley was harsh on James, but also sternly challenged him to use his platform to talk more about his own life and the odds he overcame to become one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
I’d love to hear that story, of how you became Lebron James against all odds, instead of always professing the odds are against all people.
LeBron James says “I’m so damn tired of seeing Black people killed by police!” How about this sentence, instead of that… “I’m so damn tired of seeing Black people killed.”
How about this sentence? Even more idealistic. “I’m damn tired of just seeing people killed.”
The video is a must-watch and well worth six minutes of your time. At the very least it is food for thought.
