Less than a full day after Ricky Gervais scorched Hollywood hypocrites and called out Weinstein by name from the Golden Globes stage, the Los Angeles County prosecutor’s office has announced they are officially filing charges against the disgraced film producer. The Los Angeles Times reports that Weinstein is being charged with four counts of sexual assault.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office has filed charges of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by use of force and sexual battery by restraint, according to a news release issued Monday morning. Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey is set to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. in downtown Los Angeles.
“We believe the evidence will show that the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims and then commit crimes against them,” Lacey said in a statement. “I want to commend the victims who have come forward and bravely recounted what happened to them.”
Lacey went on to say that while her office had eight credible claims against Weinstein, she felt her office only had enough evidence to confidently prosecute four of them. Lacey also indicated that the L.A. proceedings will not begin until Weinstein’s New York City charges are finished weaving through the justice system there.
It’s worth noting that Jackie Lacey is well-known for ignoring cases against high-profile Angelinos. Democrat donor-turned-murderer Ed Buck was well known in the Los Angeles gay and trans community as a predator with disturbing racial fetishes. Lacey has ignored please to investigate Buck for years, and only pressed charges after one of Buck’s victims managed to escape and the justice system was forced to begin moving. It seems unlikely Lacey hasn’t already had complaints about Weinstein on her desk for years. In California politics, you’re only as effective as your next donation check.
Regardless, it look like Weinstein’s woes aren’t even close to ending. Watching him pretend-hobble with a walker while heading into court looking like a homeless person seems like a very fitting final act for a man who truly believed he was above the law – both man’s and God’s – for so very long.
Weinstein’s L.A. bail is set at $5 million and the prosecutor’s office says they are continuing to investigate three other credible complaints against him.
