United Settles Doctor Dragging Dust-Up

United Airlines has reached a settlement in the case of their now-infamous forced removal of a passenger from an overbooked flight in April. Cell phone video captured air marshals dragging Dr. David Dao off his flight after he refused to “voluntarily” give up his seat to accommodate a flight crew in need of a ride to their next departure.

The video was quite dramatic, showing Dao bloodied and crying. Although United seemed well within their legal rights to force passengers to abandon their purchased seats, the story caused widespread outrage. It sparked a smear campaign against Dao and some pretty funny memes as well.

A United spokesperson confirmed that a settlement had been reached in the case.

“We are pleased to report that United and Dr. Dao have reached an amicable resolution of the unfortunate incident that occurred aboard flight 3411. We look forward to implementing the improvements we have announced, which will put our customers at the center of everything we do.”

United recently announced they would be implementing changes in their policies in the hopes of avoiding situations like Dao’s in the future.

The measures include new limits on when passengers can be removed from planes and much greater financial incentives — up to $10,000 in travel certificates — for those who volunteer to change flights.
