In 2012, Mr Romney won the Republican presidential nomination, and ran a good, clean campaign against Barack Obama. President Obama was saddled with an 8% unemployment rate and an economy that was expanding, though very slowly, and Mr Romney had a very good chance to win that election.
In 2016, Donald Trump won the Republican presidential nomination, and ran a hard, dirty, nasty campaign against Hillary Clinton. Mrs Clinton ran as the successor to President Obama, with a much lower unemployment rate, hovering in the 5% range, an economy which was expanding at a slightly better rate, and she was supposed to be the almost certainly guaranteed winner; Mr Trump had no way to reach 270 electoral votes.
Maybe, just maybe, if Mr Romney had fought a harder, meaner, nastier campaign, he might have won in 2012. Had Mr Romney won in 2012, we wouldn’t have needed President Trump to:
- Reverse President Obama’s 2016 order to allow ‘transgender’ people into the military;
- Reverse President Obama’s environmental policies which drove up costs while providing no benefits;
- Withdraw from the Paris Climate Accords;
- Withdraw from the ill-considered Iranian nuclear agreement;
- Reverse President Obama’s Title IX regulations which denied due process to university students accused of sexual harassment;
- Reverse President Obama’s Title IX regulations which required public schools to allow ‘transgender’ students access to restrooms and locker rooms of the sex they claim to be rather than the sex they actually are;
- Reverse President Obama’s anti-Israeli policies; and
- Try to repeal Obysmalcare.
But the kind and gentle Mr Romney didn’t win.
Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. — Vince Lombardi
Gentlemen, this school is about combat. There are no points for second place. — “Viper” in Top Gun
It does not matter how good or kind or noble Mr Romney is, or how educated or wise his policies would have been. Because he lost the election, his policies meant exactly zero as far as governing the United States was concerned.
And thus, I don’t really care that Mr Romney is so very upset about how the Trump campaign might have won; the important part is that the Trump campaign had to win because the Romney campaign failed.
