Salt Lake City police Chief Brian Redd told The Tribune that the shooting is not believed to have been a “targeted attack” at the church or faithgoers.
All eight people were shot outside the church, Redd said. Police do not believe the shooting was a “targeted attack” against the faith, he said, or that it was random.
At the time of this publication, there is no further word on the hunt for the suspects or an update on the status of those who were injured.
A spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sam Penrod, released a statement that said they were aware of a "serious incident" outside the church.
"We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy and express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind," the statement read.
Mayor Erin Mendenhall added, “This should never have happened outside a place of worship. This should never have happened outside a celebration of life.”
The shooting is currently under investigation. Check back with RedState for updates.
