‘Make America Film Again’: Trump Finds Surprising Support From Hollywood for Latest Tariff

President Donald Trump found some surprising support from parts of Hollywood for his latest proposal to implement a 100 percent tariff on foreign-made films.

On Sunday, Trump threw celebrities and the movie-making industry into a tizzy when he posted a message on Truth Social about his plans to Make Hollywood Great Again, as RedState reported.

“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda! Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!

The national executive director of The Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, has endorsed the idea, speaking for the union, made up of 160,000 performers, per the Hollywood Reporter.

“SAG-AFTRA supports efforts to increase movie, television and streaming production in the United States.” Crabtree-Ireland noted that the union will continue to “advocate for policies that strengthen our competitive position, accelerate economic growth and create good middle-class jobs for American workers.”

He also said he looks forward to learning more about the plan and “advancing a dialogue to achieve our common goals.”

Teamsters general president Sean O’Brien and motion picture division leader Lindsay Dougherty released a joint statement about the president’s proposal, labeling it a step toward “reining in the studios’ un-American addiction to outsourcing our members’ work,” THR noted.

“These gigantic corporations line their pockets by recklessly cutting corners, abandoning American crews and exploiting tax loopholes abroad,” it read. “While these companies get rich fleeing to other countries and gaming the system, our members have gotten screwed over.”

“If studios want to benefit from American box offices, they must invest in American workers,” it added. “We thank President Trump for boldly supporting good union jobs when others have turned their heads.”

“We look forward to continuing to work with the administration to build a trade agenda that benefits our members and workers throughout the American motion picture and TV industry,” it continued.

Even Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) released a statement that he’s all for the idea to “Make America Film Again” and “strengthen domestic production.”

However, the usual suspects like “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg railed against the idea, telling Trump to stay in his lane.

“What that equates to is, you’re going to tell me how to write the story I want to write if it happens in Europe? Look, could you please lower the price of eggs before you start this?” Goldberg said Tuesday during a panel discussion on the ABC daytime talk show.

“When you go over to another country to work, you work with the people who are there,” she added. “We don’t import our folks to go over there. Who are you going to put this tariff on? The production? The studio? What are you talking about?… It is part of what we do. Please stop.”

Following Trump’s post, the White House released a statement that read:

“Although no final decisions on foreign film tariffs have been made, the administration is exploring all options to deliver on President Trump’s directive to safeguard our country’s national and economic security while Making Hollywood Great Again.”
