Obama's CIA Director Slams Trump Over Warning to U.N. Countries Opposing U.S. on Israel

Former CIA Director John Brennan fired off a thinly veiled insult aimed toward Donald Trump, going so far as to compare the Republican president to “narcissistic, vengeful, autocrats.”

Brennan, who served as CIA director under President Barack Obama, tweeted Thursday following Trump’s warning to United Nations member countries that voted against the U.S.’s renewed policy that Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv, is the capital of Israel:

Trump Admin threat to retaliate against nations that exercise sovereign right in UN to oppose US position on Jerusalem is beyond outrageous. Shows @realDonaldTrump expects blind loyalty and subservience from everyone—qualities usually found in narcissistic, vengeful autocrats.

The strongly worded tweet was in response to Trump slamming the dozens of United Nations countries that voted against the administration’s policy, suggesting the U.S. could withhold funding from those countries as a result of their opposition to the U.S.

On the one hand, Trump is well within his right to threaten to withhold money from countries that take advantage of the U.S. However, Brennan is right in that the very countries that Trump warned of withdrawing funding from are themselves sovereign nations. Therefore, they have the right, just like the U.S., to have their own stated position on the issue of Israel’s capital.
