All in the Family: Conyers' Son Running Against Conyers' Great Nephew to Replace Conyers

Some people have family farms. Others, apparently, have family congressional seats.

Embattled Democratic Rep. John Conyers announced on a local Detroit radio show on Tuesday that he is retiring from the seat he has held for the past four decades. The longest-serving member in the U.S. House of Representatives said that while he is retiring, he is also endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him.

But Conyers III, a hedge fund manager, won’t go unchallenged — even in the Democratic primary.

NBC News reported Tuesday that Conyers’ great nephew Ian Conyers, a current Michigan state senator, is tossing his name in the hat to become the next Michigan congressman as well.

No word yet on whether anyone outside of the Conyers family intends to run. Either way, it’s entirely possible — perhaps even likely — that we could see another 40 years of a Conyers family member in the House.
