This time, it’s in Shreveport, Louisiana.

NEW ORLEANS—The ACLU of Louisiana sent an open letter today to the superintendent of Bossier Parish Schools, concerning a pattern of religious proselytization at Airline High School in Bossier City.

In an email Thursday, Bossier Schools spokeswoman Sonja Bailes said: “Superintendent (D.C.) Machen is not in town but has been made aware of the letter sent by the ACLU. We are currently consulting the advice of our board attorney for further direction.”

The alleged “proselytization” comes in the form of a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes wanting to set up “prayer boxes” around the school in order to collect prayer intentions for those that need them most. It’s in no way an act of a state body forcing religion on anyone, or making anyone convert or be kicked out, which is what (contrary to what the ACLU believes) the First Amendment’s take on government and religion actually is.

The group goes further and attacks the principal for daring to say “pray to God Almighty” to some students, which is essentially the same thing as forcing someone to pray to the Christian God, right?

Luckily, we have a state representative in Louisiana who has some sense. Mike Johnson, who sponsored a religious liberty bill in our most recent legislative session, has offered his law firm to the Bossier Parish School Board free of charge to aid them against the ACLU, should any action be taken. The school board will address the issue at their regular meeting on October 1.

I have an issue with Johnson, however, in a quote he gave the Shreveport Times (story linked above):

“This is typical of the ACLU,” Johnson said. “They’re on a seek-and-destroy mission for all things religious.”

This is not about destroying all things religious. Time and again, we see that the only religion that gets targeted in these situations is Christianity.
