On the Mexico City Metro, they apparently have a problem with creepy men who make too much contact with female passengers on crowded trains. Their solution—or at least an attempt at calling attention to the issue—is the “penis seat.” It is an idea that should not be allowed to cross our southern border.

They have actually installed seats that are molded into the shape of a man’s chest and groin region. The idea is that sitting on this seat simulates the uncomfortable feeling women endure when subway riding pervs press up against them.

The “penis seat” has been specially moulded into the shape of a man’s groin and chest so as to echo when sat on the uncomfortable feeling female passengers get when a fellow commuter leans in a little too closely.

It sounds like a joke, but the “penis seat” actually has a very important point to make. Its part of a new campaign against sexual harassment on public transport: a problem that has caused discomfort to many commuters in Mexico City recently.

I know there have been some silly issues raised by feminists about public transportation (i.e. “man spreading”) that are mock-worthy but if men are grinding on women during their morning commute that really needs to stop. Will this seat do anything toward that end? Probably not. This has the same sort of flawed logic behind it as the “teach men not to rape” idea mantra among feminists.

The best part of the video is the group of guys trying to push their buddy down on to the seat.

A video has been shot showing people’s reactions as they sit on the chair. Some do so without noticing, before leaping in fright at the sight of the plastic member between their legs. Others attempt to cover the embarrassment with their jackets. And then there are those who simply turn away in disgust at the sheer idea of the “penis seat”.

“It’s uncomfortable to sit here but it doesn’t compare with the sexual violence that women suffer in their everyday lives,” a sign about it reads. “9 out of 10 women in Mexico City have been victims of some form of sexual violence.”

Let’s be honest, in America we would end up having people using these seats “recreationally.”

As someone who used to be a daily rider of Washington, D.C.’s metro system, I would suggest that they maybe consider seats that simulate what it feels like to get smacked in the head with a giant backpack or maybe one that simulates being seated next to someone with weapons grade B.O.
