The media/politics revolving door is spinning freely in the state of Maryland. Television journalist Kathleen Matthews—wife of MSNBC’s town drunk Chris Matthews—will be the interim party chair for the Maryland Democrat Party.
Matthews, who unsuccessfully sought the 2016 Democratic nomination for Maryland’s 8th district congressional seat, lives in Montgomery County and has spent the past 40 years as a journalist, communications executive and political activist in Maryland and Washington.
Just imagine all the fake news she cranked out over the years.
She assumes leadership of a party that is numerically dominant in Maryland, with a 2-to-1 registration advantage over Republicans, seven of eight congressional seats and veto-proof majorities in both houses of the state legislature. But Democrats have struggled to gain traction against popular Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, who scored an upset victory in 2014 over then-lieutenant governor Anthony G. Brown (D).
She was recruited for the position by several old white men because diversity is important to Democrats.
Matthews, who was unavailable for comment on Thursday, said in an interview last month that she was approached about becoming party chair by senior Maryland Democrats — U.S. Rep. Steny H. Hoyer and Sens. Benjamin L. Cardin and Chris Van Hollen.
At least one prominent state Democrat complained that the process lacked transparency.
Her appointment drew criticism from former Montgomery County Council member Valerie Ervin (D), who said the state party’s process smacked of insiderism and minimal transparency.
She’s right, but then again, everything in Maryland politics smacks of “insiderism and minimal transparency.”
