Freshman Rep. George Santos (R-NY) is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters on Capitol Hill Tuesday.

McCarthy said:

“Ethics is moving through, and if ethics finds something, we’ll take action. Right now we’re not allowing him to be on committees from the standpoint of the questions that have arisen.”

Following up, a reporter asked McCarthy if his comment meant that the panel is currently investigating Santos, to which McCarthy replied, “Yes.”

It’s unclear which allegations against Santos are being investigated. Santos has admitted to lying about his past, and there are questions about his campaign finance reporting. On Friday, Santos was accused of sexual harassment by a man who had just started working in Santos’ Capitol Hill office.

Santos told CNN he was “not concerned” about the House Ethics investigation or some of his constituents calling on him to resign.

“You’re saying that the freedom of speech of my constituents is a distraction to my work?” Santos said. “Do you think people are a distraction to the work I’m doing here?”

Santos voluntarily stepped down from his committee assignments last week.
