A “Town Hall” in which Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel lied countless times, in which NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch was harassed and threatened, and in which bratty, disrespectful teenagers berated a U.S. Senator with unchecked false narratives, has been “honored with a Cronkite Award” for “advanc[ing] the national conversation on gun control and violence.”

A press release from the Norman Lear Center (located at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism), which hands out the awards, carries the headline, “Cronkite Award Winners Prove Facts Matter.”

There truly are no words.

The press release begins:

“Celebrating the indispensability of the free press to the health of American democracy, the winners of the 10th biennial Walter Cronkite Awards for Excellence in Television Political Journalism were announced today by the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.”

There was nothing “healthy” about that Town Hall. Deception, intimidation, and misogyny were celebrated. Polite, collegial discourse and factual, logical debate were entirely absent.

In the wake of the Town Hall, Loesch and her family received death threats and were forced to move after those who wished her ill discovered her home address.

Loesch tweeted some video clips from the event to remind people that this event was the exact opposite of what it is being honored for.

The mainstream media have completely lost any sense of fairness or objectivity. It’s difficult to have a productive national conversation when people are being fed misinformation from a mentally unstable media.
