It's 1862 All Over Again: Ana Navarro Waxes Ineloquent About Illegal Labor and the Price of Milk

Republican political strategist Ana Navarro gets paid well by ABC, CNN and Telemundo to propagate leftist propaganda as a supposedly wise Republican LatinX voice. No one bothers to note that Navarro has not supported a Republican since Jeb Bush and John McCain, but that's beside the point. Navarro's latest bit on a Tuesday CNN panel was to espouse this stunning revelation: if illegal immigrants are rounded up and deported, who is going to milk the cows?

It's a looming crisis, don't yah know. On the panel, Navarro said,

Look, what's going to happen here, is, we're going to find that milk gets a lot higher. Because I don't know if any of you have ever been to a dairy farm, it is god-awful work. We're going to see that groceries and vegetables are higher, we're going to see an effect on our economy, because whether people like it or not, whether Americans acknowledge it or not, undocumented immigrants are an integral part of our society and our economy.

"Integral." Why is that? Who made it integral? Perhaps Navarro needs to look into how the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has in the past given preference to corporate farmers over smaller concerns, and how price controls, especially in the dairy industry, have cut into the smaller concerns' ability to operate. According to USDA releases, Ag. Secy. Brooke Rollins is working to implement Trump administration policies that will reverse this trend. We shall see. But Navarro wanted to continue to paint her dystopian vision of "U.S. citizens detained" and children being ripped from their mothers because of Trump's policies. Cue the tiny violins.

And we're going to have to get used to seeing the videos of U.S. citizens detained, of U.S. citizen children being ripped from the arms of their mothers while they wail. Dads, and moms, and business owners [panelist interjected in agreement] Yeah, we're going to get used to that...

I very seriously doubt Navarro has ever visited a dairy farm: you probably would have to pry her out of Manhattan with a crowbar. What Navarro is doing is parroting a New York Times piece that promotes the danger of the dairy industry being a target of ICE raids. You know, typical reporting from this digital birdcage liner. The NYT also paints another sad and dystopian tale about how one American dairy farmer is in fear because his reliance on illegal workers is necessary for his farm's productivity. After all, these are jobs that Americans just won't do.

Mmmkay.

What Peter does know, however, is that without foreign-born workers, his dairy could not stay afloat. Americans are understandably reluctant to perform dirty, dangerous and demanding work — what economists call 3-D jobs — as long as they have better alternatives. Unemployment in southern Idaho has averaged 3.4 percent for a decade; wages for entry-level workers on Peter’s farm are competitive with those for cashiers at fast-food franchises. He can’t pay much more, he insists, and still break even.

It's the same sentiment being promoted by Occupy Democrats. Red states are too stupid to understand that they will have to do really hard work if they expect to have vegetables, due to Trump removing all the illegal aliens who pick them. Like Navarro, whoever came up with this ridiculous meme never bothered to actually visit a rural community in a red state. We put the "farmer" in the farmer's markets they so love to frequent on Saturday to pay $10.00 a pound for organic spinach. A majority of Midwest and Southern folk either trade homegrown produce with each other and among their community, or they sell it at markets and cooperatives of their own.

But yeah, elitists gonna elite, and Democrats will make stupid arguments based on the bubble in which they exist.

It is eerily similar to the argument the Southern states were making in the early 1860s about cotton and slave labor: that their economic viability and way of life depended upon Black slavery. Same Democrats, same playbook, and the talking points platform their stunning ignorance.

Here's an interesting discovery that Navarro and whoever gets paid for research at CNN failed to mention: one college in Missouri actually has a work-study program where the students farm the land and manage the dairy cows in exchange for free tuition. Sssh! Don't tell Occupy Democrats.

Located near Branson, Missouri, on 1,000 acres of bucolic countryside, College of the Ozarks is home to 1,500 students, and none of them pay tuition. Their free education is thanks to the school’s integrated work program, which assigns students to various jobs around campus based on their top five choices. Students tend to the landscape, weave baskets, run admission to the school’s museum, grind grain in its mill to make products like stone-ground grits and whole wheat flour, milk the 60-plus dairy cows, raise the school’s Hampshire and hybrid hogs, run the weekly farmers’ market, tend to its garden beds, wait tables in Dobyns Dining Room and even work in its kitchen. Total, there are more than 80 work stations on campus.

Even more surprising than, say, the fact that the pork guests order in the dining room was raised, butchered and processed by students, is that those students often aren’t even majoring in a degree related to the school’s hog farm.

Rylan Hill, a junior, has been working in the school’s gardens for two semesters, but his major is in wildlife conservation. When Hill first began taking classes, he worked in the school’s custodial program; now he labors in the gardens and at the farmers’ market and has swapped mops for garden hoes and hand spades.

But somebody should tell Harvard. Maybe if they had such a program, they wouldn't need federal dollars.
