I have fallen in love with a series on Disney XD called "Roman to the Rescue." Roman McConn lives in Lubbock, Texas, and he and his team find dogs to foster. Fostering them allows Roman to discover the dog's unique traits and needs, in order to place them in perfect forever homes!
The show is done through The Dodo, and includes Roman's Squad, who thankfully are nothing like the toxic bunch in Congress. These friends are his videographers (so Gen Alpha), and also assist him with the care and training of the fur kids. Roman gets assistance from a super cool vet named Dr. Aziza and Roman's own pooch Luna.
Roman and his Squad don't just focus on finding any home for these dogs, but the right home with the right humans, who will love and care for these animals for the course of their short lives. In 2016, Roman and his parents started a non-profit called Project Freedom Ride. An infrastructure for donations and funding allows them to transport dogs from high-kill shelters in Texas and Georgia to homes across the United States. Project Freedom Ride focuses on the Northern United States and British Columbia, where there are more willing adopters but fewer dogs.
Roman's mission to save as many dogs as he could started when he was four years old.
In 2015, while his dad was stationed in San Angelo, Texas, then 4 year old Roman, learned that not all dogs make it out of shelters alive. He became a boy on a mission and was determined to give every dog more than a life in a kennel.
Originally, it started as Roman just visiting dogs in the shelters and making videos to help them find loving families in the local area.
It's no wonder this young visionary was offered television fame.
Roman and his mom started visiting shelters to make videos featuring the dogs up for adoption. They focused on the dogs that were more scared and shut down, as they needed the most help.
Over time, Roman’s efforts expanded beyond making videos. He and his family began fostering shelter dogs in their home until they could find them permanent families. This experience allowed Roman to form close bonds with the dogs and ensure they were cared for before finding their forever families.
What a beautiful heart of love and compassion in this boy. But Roman's parents get kudos for showing Roman how he could take his compassion and put it into meaningful action. Thanks to Roman's work, he has appeared on "Animal Planet," "Little Big Shots," and "The Ellen Show," twice. Roman was named the 2018 ASPCA Kid of the Year, and will probably get a lot more honors and awards in the future. Since 2016, Project Freedom Ride has saved 4,844 dogs from euthanasia and found them loving homes.
Here's the first episode of "Roman to the Rescue." If you have Disney XD, you can probably get the latest season. The first season is airing now on Hulu.
It does this fur mama's heart good to know that there is a young person out there who wants to make a difference in the world by pairing good dogs with good humans. My trio of pups has enriched our lives beyond measure, so it is absolutely thrilling to see people open their hearts and their homes to our canine friends.
Roman is not only a class act, but a quality young boy who is growing into a quality young man. To donate to Project Freedom Ride, visit their website.
For those mushes out there (like me), here's a compilation from "Roman to the Rescue," of the dogs meeting their forever families.
