According to the House docket, the bill seeks to address the issues regarding immigration and border security, including an imposition of limits to asylum eligibility.

From UPI:

House Republicans on Thursday passed the Secure the Border Act ahead of Title 42 immigration restrictions expiring at midnight.

The bill greatly limits asylum eligibility and expands the offenses that disqualify a person from being eligible for entry. It also directs the Department of Homeland Security to resume construction on former President Donald Trump‘s border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Following the vote, House Republicans, led by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., held a press conference to laud the proposal. McCarthy called it the “strongest border security bill this country has ever seen.”

Majority Leader Steve Scalise shared this statement by GOP leadership on the House passage of the bill:

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA-20), Majority Leader Steve Scalise (LA-01), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (MN-06), and Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21) issued the following statement after the passage of H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act:

“Today, as the Biden administration allows Title 42 to expire, House Republicans are taking action to address the chaos at our nation’s borders by delivering legislation that will support our Border Patrol agents, block the flow of fentanyl into our country, and put an end to the Biden Border Crisis.

“Over the last two years, we have heard from Border Patrol agents, ranchers, families, and businesses who have suffered under President Biden’s open-border agenda, turning every city in America into a border city.

“H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, delivers on our Commitment to America to end this crisis. Our plan will increase the number of Border Patrol agents, provide effective border enforcement technology, resume construction of the border wall, and end the administration’s catch and release policy.

“While President Biden and Washington Democrats continue to ignore the chaos at our border, House Republicans are taking charge by passing the strongest border security bill this country has ever seen. The American people deserve nothing less.”

The Democrat minority in the House and Democrat Party leaders held a press conference to criticize the bill and to make their concerns known.

A coalition of Democrats were critical of the Republican-proposed act ahead of its House floor vote on Thursday, calling it “cruel” and “unworkable.”

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus hosted a press conference with leaders of the Democratic Party, Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Progressive Caucus, and the New Democrat Coalition. Members of each organization sounded off on the policy.

“This bill is the product of extreme Republicans’ cruel, unworkable and extreme immigration policy,” said CHC Chair Nanette Diaz Barragán. “The Republican child deportation act jails children and families. The bill effectively separates innocent children from their families and leaves them vulnerable to bad actors and to smugglers.”

The bill moves to the Senate, and Speaker Kevin McCarthy is urging its passage and that President Joe Biden signs it into law.

“Mr. President, my message is very simple; do not miss another deadline, like you just missed on Title 42. Our country cannot afford it. The Republicans will always act responsibly and will also always look for solutions.”
