BREAKING: Nury Martinez Resigns Her Council Seat in CD 6

Los Angeles City Council member and former president Nury Martinez announced on Wednesday that she is resigning her Council District 6 seat.

L.A. Fox 11 correspondent Elex Michaelson broke the news on Twitter. The remaining L.A. City Council is probably issuing sighs of relief.

Nury Martinez resigned her seat on the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday, days after the release of an explosive leaked audio of a racist, crude conversation.

“It is with a broken heart that I resign my seat for Council District 6, the community I grew up in and my home,” Martinez wrote in a tweet.

The move came amid mounting pressures from all corners of politics, from President Biden to many community activists and council colleagues.

Martinez issued a long statement documented here:

On Monday, Martinez initially resigned her post as president of the L.A. City Council. After a contentious City Council meeting on Tuesday, Martinez took a leave of absence from her seat. However, the outcry and protests demanding her resignation were apparently too difficult to overcome, and she submitted her resignation on Wednesday.
