Questioning the Consensus: A Closer Look at Gender-Affirming Care for Minors

Progressives are quite fond of claiming that not only does science prove that using “gender-affirming care” on minor children is beneficial for their mental health, but they also insist that the medical community agrees.

However, the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) recently released a statement flying in the face of the notion that there is some sort of consensus among medical professionals on giving puberty blockers, hormone treatments, and performing surgery on kids.

In the statement, the ACPeds voiced serious concerns about gender dysphoria among children, which has been increasing at alarming rates. The organization noted that there is a notable lack of long-term evidence suggesting that these treatments provide medical benefits for adults who went through “gender-affirming care” as children.

ACPeds pointed out that children with gender dysphoria “have an increased incidence of mental health issues, including depression and suicidal ideation.” The organization also highlighted that “previous adverse experiences may play a major role” in those who are confused about their gender.

There are no long-term studies demonstrating benefits nor studies evaluating risks associated with the medical and surgical interventions provided to these adolescents.  There is no long-term evidence that mental health concerns are decreased or alleviated after “gender affirming therapy.” Many individuals who have been treated with “GAT” later regret those interventions and seek to align their gender identity with their sex. Because of the risks of social, medical, and surgical interventions, many European countries are now cautioning against these interventions while encouraging mental health therapy.

These are points that have been made over and over again. Yet, progressive proponents of “gender-affirming care” for minors haven’t come up with a good response to it. Instead, they simply ignore the reality and label anyone who disagrees as an anti-trans bigot.

The ACPeds called for using a more cautious approach to treating kids with gender dysphoria, stressing the need for comprehensive psychological assessment and care instead of simply pushing forward with medical interventions without fully understanding the issues the child is experiencing.

Other organizations have expressed doubts about the efficacy of “gender-affirming care.” Most surprisingly, the World Health Organization recently signaled caution on this approach and has called for further research into the long-term effects of this type of treatment.

The report discusses the WHO’s effort to create guidelines for treating people with gender dysphoria. However, it notes that “this guideline has a specific focus on adults and will not address issues relating to children and adolescents.”

Later in the document, the WHO explains that it is limiting its guidelines to adults because “the evidence base for children and adolescents is limited and variable regarding the longer-term outcomes of gender affirming care for children and adolescents.”

This seems to indicate that the WHO is conceding that there is not enough evidence showing that the often irreversible procedures favored in “gender-affirming care” are beneficial to the mental health of youngsters facing gender dysphoria.

As I’ve indicated plenty of times before, the public is not buying the notion that using irreversible procedures on kids is a good idea. This is why proponents of “gender-affirming care” are trying to use the government to compel people to go along with it. Several therapists have gone public with their stories of being pressured to rush into gender-affirming treatments without a holistic approach to understanding their patients’ issues.

The fact that healthcare organizations are starting to speak out against the effort to trans children is encouraging. It is essential that more people push back against the use of “gender-affirming care” on children, which has been a central component of the far-leftist agenda.
