Alright, It's Time to Drop the Taylor Swift Conspiracy Theories for Crying Out Loud

We need to talk about Taylor Swift. Actually, we need to talk about this new fixation that many conservatives and libertarians have developed for the pop singer, who has been featured in the news more frequently due to her romance with football player Travis Kelce.

Over the past few days, some right-wing influencers began floating a new conspiracy theory involving the couple, and it’s quite a doozy. However, this odd obsession of some on the right has now gotten to the point where it has become, in a word, silly.

RedState’s Brad Slager described the mock furor over Swift and Kelce’s supposed scheme to rig the Superbowl and somehow use it to ensure that President Joe Biden wins reelection.

What is playing out now is a cultural battle swirling around the pop star and the HOF TE. There are those on the right who have become everything from dismayed to outraged over her ascendancy, and now there is (supposedly) serious concern she could sway the upcoming election. Many in the press are jumping on the various reactions seen across the conservative media landscape, and the mockery has been delivered via firehose. There is (again, supposedly) a theory/conspiracy that this is all a manufactured PSYOP and that Democrat operatives behind a curtain spinning dials and yanking switches are manipulating this cultural astroturf storyline to benefit Joe Biden.

Do any people on the right actually believe this? Certainly some, but doubtful many. What is at play are right-of-center pundits seeing this opportunity as a good play to the audience, with varying degrees of seriousness. Most of it is an opportunity for clicks and engagement. Much of what I have seen has bordered on mirthful or appealing to the so-over-it nature of this hype.

Slager goes on to highlight the left freaking out because the right is freaking out about Swift. But progressives mocking the right over this insanity is quite rich given how they screech like banshees if someone dares to suggest that a man cannot become a woman.

Nevertheless, the whole Taylor Swift “controversy” has reached levels of mania that are only making folks on the right look silly and distracting us from the important issues of the day. Look at how Trump ally Brenden Dilley addresses the issue and you will see what I mean.

Those expressing concerns about Swift using her celebrity status to benefit Biden are new to the party. For starters, Swift’s fame is not manufactured in the way that is being implied. The singer has been famous for years. Do you know what else she has been for years? That’s right, she has been on the left side of the aisle. She actively encouraged her followers to support Biden during the 2020 election. She will likely do the same this election season. It’s already baked into the cake.

However, none of this means that Swift has the power to affect the outcome of the upcoming election. It is doubtful even she would be able to persuade those planning to vote for former President Donald Trump to jump ship and support Biden. The singer will just be singing to the choir and it is highly doubtful that a significant percentage of voters will say "Hey, Taylor Swift is supporting Biden, maybe we should too!"

Moreover, there isn’t some magical smoke-filled room conspiracy involving Swift. Both Democrats and Republicans have used celebrities to garner support. In the words of King Solomon, “There is nothing new under the sun,” and if he were alive today, there can be no doubt that he would characterize the right’s fixation on Swift as “meaningless” and a “chasing after the wind.”

Currently, there are far more important issues that should be getting more of our attention. The Biden administration is cooking up yet another way to use the ATF to limit gun rights. Six pro-life activists were just convicted for their political views and could possibly spend a decade in a cage because of our corrupt Justice Department. RedState’s Jennifer Van Laar literally just reported that the Republican National Committee blew $1.5 million on various frivolities.

For folks on the right, I’d argue that each of these issues are leaps and bounds more important than Taylor Swift and her boyfriend.

I’m not saying that none of us should ever discuss Swift or other celebrities. But going down these rabbit holes is not helping anyone except the influencers anxiously trying to get your well-coveted clicks.
