Cori Bush Introduces Resolution Condemning Violence in Israel - Guess What She Left Out

Progressive lawmakers have introduced a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas. The proposed measure, introduced by Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), focuses on urging the Biden administration to facilitate humanitarian aid while also “calling for an immediate de-escalation and cease-fire in Israel and occupied Palestine.”

The resolution begins by acknowledging that “all human life is precious, and the targeting of civilians, no matter their faith or ethnicity, is a violation of international humanitarian law.”

Bush’s document, which is being cosponsored by Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Andre Carson (D-IN), Summer Lee (D-PA), and Delia Ramirez (D-IL), notes that “armed violence has claimed the lives of over 2,700 Palestinians and over 1,400 Israelis, including Americans, and wounded thousands more” and also that “hundreds of thousands of lives are at imminent risk if a cease-fire is not achieved and humanitarian aid is not delivered without delay.”

The resolution ends by asking the Biden administration to “facilitate de-escalation” and to “promptly send and facilitate the entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza.”

Nihad Awad, National Executive Director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, praised the resolution in a written statement, saying, “We thank Representatives Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Andre Carson, and other congressional resolution co-sponsors for their efforts to protect the lives of all civilians.”

He also noted that Israel’s government is “subjecting Palestinians trapped in Gaza to a total blockade and a relentless bombing campaign that has already killed more than two thousand civilians, and over 1,000 children.”

We can already see what is conspicuously absent from this resolution and Awad’s remarks, can’t we? It makes no mention of who started the violence or who has been deliberately killing innocent civilians – including children. Nor does it mention the nearly 200 hostages being held in Gaza. The reality is that Hamas ignited this conflict when it launched a surprise attack on Israel earlier this month. Other users on social media also highlighted this omission.

The reality is that there is no real moral equivalency between Israel and Hamas – especially not in this current issue. The terrorist organization has inflicted numerous atrocities on Israeli civilians while also placing Palestinians in danger.

RedState’s Bonchie reported on the discovery of 40 babies who had been murdered in the town of Kfar Aza. Some had been beheaded. In another instance, an Israeli mother claimed a Hamas terrorist sent her a video showing the murder of her son and his girlfriend. The massacre at a music festival further illustrated the depravity of Hamas.

When taking a macro look at the entirety of the Israel/Palestinian conflict, there is plenty of valid criticism to go around. Even those with good intentions are not perfect. But the notion that Hamas can slaughter civilians with impunity and progressives will still defend it is an abhorrent affront to morality. It is also what happens when people give in to hyperpartisanship and political expediency.

Nobody wants to see innocent people get killed. Most can sympathize with the plight of Israelis and Palestinians affected by Hamas’ terrorism. But the notion that we should pretend the two entities are equal is absurd on its face. Unfortunately, too many of our political leaders are motivated more by politics than humanity.
