Michigan Gov. Whitmer Proves I Was Right About Democrats Being Pro-Abortion

Didn’t I tell you these people aren’t pro-choice? Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a virulently pro-abortion Democrat, just made a move that illustrates how the left actually views the abortion issue.

Spoiler alert: It further shows that they are not interested in providing actual choices for pregnant mothers. Instead, they just want to push them to kill their babies in the womb. We can’t have Planned Parenthood losing money, can we?

I recently wrote a piece explaining that the days of Democrats being pro-choice have gone the way of CNN Plus. The fact that they are seeking to use legislative – and violent – means to target crisis pregnancy centers shows they do not want women choosing to keep their babies. If they did, they would have absolutely no problem with pregnancy centers offering alternatives to abortion.

But now, Gov. Whitmer has reportedly used her line-item veto power to eliminate provisions that would support pregnancy facilities, adoption agencies, and maternity homes. In essence, she does not want the state to support any alternatives to abortion. Breitbart News reported:

Before signing the $76 billion state budget, Whitmer cancelled a $2 million adoption tax credit, $10 million to promote adoption “as an alternative to abortion,” $3 million for a maternal navigator pilot program, and $700,000 for the Real Alternatives pregnancy program, which promotes “childbirth, alternatives to abortion, and grief counseling.”

Whitmer defended her decision by explaining that she is “pulling out all the stops” to ensure abortion rights are state law. But what she – and her Democratic colleagues – are really trying to do is to make abortion the number one option for mothers who unexpectedly become pregnant and are deciding what to do.

The governor said she has even spoken with the Biden administration to urge them to “talk with their Canadian counterparts” to make sure that American mothers can travel to our neighbor to the north to terminate their pregnancies if they are not able to do so in the U.S.

After the Supreme Court handed down its ruling overturning Roe v. Wade last month, Whitmer filed a motion asking the Michigan Supreme Court to determine whether the state’s constitution protects abortion.

“Today, I filed a motion urging the court to immediately take up my lawsuit to protect abortion in Michigan,” she said on June 24. “We need to clarify that under Michigan law, access to abortion is not only legal, but constitutionally protected. The urgency of the moment is clear—the Michigan court must act now.”

Naturally, Republicans in the state’s legislature objected to Whitmer’s line vetoes, rightly pointing out that she is seeking to limit women’s choices rather than expand them. State Rep. Thomas Albert argued that Whitmer’s actions “support only one option for women in a crisis pregnancy — the deadly choice of abortion.”

“It is shocking that the governor, and her far left political base, are now so extreme that helping pregnant women who might consider adoption instead is now a bridge too far,” he added.

Albert is spot on. Whitmer seeks to limit women’s choices to abortion as much as she possibly can. She does not want mothers with unexpected pregnancies to even consider having the child. Indeed, the governor appears to be trying to maximize the number of abortions in Michigan as possible. There is no other way to explain what she is doing here. After all, if one is actually pro-choice, they would not care what the mother chose. But as I’ve said before, progressives are pro-choice as long as that choice is abortion.

Whitmer is not alone. We can expect to see similar efforts on the part of Democrats in other states and also at the federal level. The pro-abortion movement took a major hit last month and they know it. This is why they are scrambling to make every effort to safeguard their most unholy of sacraments. This will be a significant front in the overall battle over abortion. The pro-life movement had better be ready for an epic battle in the coming years.
