Operation Warp Speed’s Chief Adviser Says Things Will ‘Start Getting Back To Normal’ In Spring. That’s Doubtful.

Operation Warp Speed chief adviser Moncef Slaoui recently predicted that Americans’ lives might “start getting back to normal” by the spring if the distribution of vaccines proceeds as planned. AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Pfizer have collaborated with the Trump administration initiative for vaccine research and have applied for emergency authorization of the vaccine with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

During a Sunday appearance on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Slaoui discussed the schedule and impact of the injection.

“I think we may start to see some impact on the most susceptible people probably in the month of January and February, but on a population basis, for our lives to start getting back to normal, we’re talking about April or May,” Slaoui explained.

“And therefore it’s absolutely vital that everybody, A, take comfort in the fact that we have light at the end of the tunnel and find the energy in that to continue to wear our masks, distance, wash our hands, pay attention to what we are doing to make sure that we are there by the spring to benefit from the vaccine,” he added.

The chief adviser also expressed his confidence that the FDA would “make a positive decision” on the vaccine approval, but reminded viewers that it is “their decision.”

“They are totally separated and fire-walled from the operation,” he said. “They will make their own judgment based on the data. And I hope that the decision will be positive.”

However, there are valid reasons to doubt Slaoui’s prediction, but very few of them are related to the efficacy of the vaccine. Things will likely not go back to normal in the Spring for many Americans who live in states whose governors have displayed an appalling thirst for power and onerous restrictions during the pandemic.

These leaders have chosen to enact strict rules preventing workers from working and business owners from operating their companies. To add insult to injury, many Democrat politicians have refused to adhere to the restrictions they put in place.

Even if the vaccine gets the coronavirus under control, we can be sure that leaders like California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and others will find excuses to keep as many COVID-related restrictions in place as long as possible.

For them, this is not about stopping the spread of the illness, it is about control. They likely want to see how much the American public will tolerate when it comes to government intrusion into people’s lives. In places like Philadelphia, Democratic officials are already planning new restrictions that will be in effect through 2021.

If former Vice President Joe Biden occupies the Oval Office at that time, he will lead the charge when it comes to enacting coronavirus measures at the federal level. He already announced that he would call on Americans nationwide to abide by a mask mandate for the next 100 days.

The only way to ensure that Slaoui’s prediction comes true is for conservatives to vigorously push back against the Democrats’ effort to continue with the restrictions. When the vaccine is distributed on a widespread basis, the left will have no more excuses to keep these measures in place, but this does not mean they will not try. Indeed, unless they meet with fierce opposition, they will push these rules for as long as possible, even if they have to persist until 2022.
