Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said on Saturday that he would refuse to meet with Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett to discuss her confirmation. He joins the rest of his colleagues on the left who have had a collective meltdown over Trump’s pick for the highest court in the land.
In an appearance on MSNBC, he explained his reasons for his refusal to sit down with Barrett. He stated that he would not meet with her because he believes “it would treat this process a legitimate, which it is not.” Predictably, the Senator also indicated that he would oppose her confirmation.
He said:
“I’m going to oppose her nomination. Because I think it is part of an illegitimate, sham process, but it also threatens real people, real lives in very real ways. And during a pandemic, the last thing we ought to be considering is a justice who is committed to striking down the Affordable Care Act, and you can be sure she has passed that ‘strong test,’ the president’s words, for what the test should be, and I will not be meeting with her. Because I think it would treat this process as legitimate, which it is not.”
Democratic lawmakers have been vocal in their opposition to Trump’s decision to nominate a Supreme Court justice before the election despite his having the constitutional right to do so. People like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have even gone so far as to suggest impeaching Trump and Attorney General William Barr to stall the confirmation process.
But it’s not only Democratic officials who are attempting to stop Barrett’s appointment. The party’s close friends and allies in the corporate press are working overtime to discredit the judge. Unfortunately for them, their attacks have been rather ineffectual, consisting of bigoted attacks on her faith and pretending that a religious group to which she belonged was the inspiration of the famous novel “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Progressives in the media have even tried to use Barrett’s children against her, lambasting her family’s decision to adopt two black kids from Haiti. As my colleague Bonchie noted, “Apparently, the fact that Barret has adopted children from Haiti is just the kind of thing Democrats are hoping to make an issue.”
One high-profile leftist even intimated that Barrett’s family may have engaged in human trafficking to adopt the children from Haiti.
In the end, it’s quite clear, despite Blumenthal’s assertion, that it is not Barrett’s nomination that is illegitimate, it is the insipid attacks coming from the left that lack about as much credibility as Senator’s service in Vietnam. Like it or not, the Democrats will have to stomach the confirmation of yet another Trump-appointed judge and none of their tantrums can do anything to stop it.
