Obama is not Interested in Fighting Radical Islam in Africa

In case you need any more evidence of how unserious the Obama administration is about fighting radical Islam, look no further than what’s happening in Africa. First of all, after the martyrdom of those 21 Coptic Christians, Egypt decided Jordan was onto something and began their own airstrikes against the Islamic State. Unsurprisingly, Obama has declined to support them, even though these strikes would make progress toward degrading and destroying ISISAs CNS News reports:

The United States does not support Egyptian and Emirati airstrikes against Islamist militias in Libya because the U.S. believes the crisis in Libya must be resolved politically and without outside interference, a Department of Defense spokesman said Tuesday.

Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) carrying out airstrikes in Libya was different from U.S. airstrikes against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant forces in Iraq, Pentagon spokesman Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby told a briefing, because the U.S. was acting in Iraq, in a “very targeted” manner, at the request of its government.

And here is soon-to-be former Pentagon spokesman RADM John Kirby explaining the Obama administration’s decision:

Before you direct your ire at Kirby, remember that as spokesman, it is his job to relay the administration’s position whether he agrees with it or not. If he doesn’t like it, he can resign-which is why I referred to him as a “soon-to-be former Pentagon spokesman”. He tendered his resignation yesterday. The official reason given was that new Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter wanted to “revisit the role of spokesman” (whatever that means), but it’s hard not to think that a self-respecting Navy Admiral wouldn’t look at Obama’s increasingly laughable foreign policy and want to get out as soon as he can. He even admits something of the sort in the article I’ve linked.

That digression aside, Obama’s unserious approach to fighting radical Islam in Africa hasn’t just manifested itself in the fight against ISIS in North Africa. In Sub-Saharan West Africa, Boko Haram is continuing its barbarism. The administration, meanwhile, is more concerned with pushing its radical Left-wing social agenda upon Nigeria than it is with fighting the terrorists. In fact, it appears that any aid from the United States hinges upon the country accepting birth control and gay marriage. Nigerian Catholic Bishop Emmanuel Badejo explained it in an interview with Christian news organization Aleteia. It’s seven pages long, but here’s the relevant part (emphasis mine):

I provided analysis for Vatican Radio not too long ago, and I asked two questions: is it really true that there is no one out there who can identify where all the money of Boko Haram is coming from? Is it true that there is nobody in the West who can at least help to block the funding of Boko Haram? Is it true that there is really nothing that Europe and America can do about it? I think there is a complicity also in the West in what is happening.

I take it all back to the agenda of population control. That’s my theory. Anything that can reduce the population. There has been an inordinate alarm about the exploding populations in Africa. And anything that can be done to decrease or limit the growth of the population in Africa is quite welcome.

In fact, recently I was alarmed when I heard Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State, say that the United States government was committed to anything that would push the population control agenda. The United States actually said it would help Nigeria with Boko Haram only if we modify our laws concerning homosexuality, family planning, and birth control. It’s very clear that a cultural imperialism exists. In fact, I think that Africa is suffering greatly from a cultural imperialism that threatens to erode our cultural values.

And I think, to say the least, it is criminal. Because if the West boasts of being committed to human freedom, mean it. If there are values that the West cherishes, they must not impose those values on Africa. It is part of human freedom. And at least Africa can stand up and say: “These are the values we cherish and these are the values we want to keep.” If the West cherishes freedom for gays and homosexual unions and abortion and contraception, suppose Africans are not wired that way. For the African, life is sacred. And that the world can watch hundreds of people dying in Nigeria every day and look away: it shows that even what we call Western civilization today is sick. What we say about human dignity and human rights is mere hypocrisy. There is a diminishing sense of the respect for the sanctity of life. And all of this is to be imposed on Africa, at whatever cost: we think that it is immoral and that it is unjust.

So, while Boko Haram is slaughtering people by the thousands in Nigeria, remember that our government is refusing to help because the country refuses to adopt the Left’s destructive social mores. A quick survey of Nigeria’s own media shows that Bishop Badejo isn’t the only one aware of this.

Our semi-retired President appears to be more concerned with gay rights and where  his next golf game is than he is with the real problems around the world. That’s about the only conclusion I can reach when surveying his halfhearted attempt at creating a foreign policy. Under the Obama administration we are fiddling while the world burns around us.
