A U.N. school in Gaza was recently hit by some Israeli shells. It appears to be the result of the IDF aiming for some Hamas forces nearby. Unsurprisingly, the White House was among the first in line to condemn Israel for this. An Associated Press release reports:
The White House condemned the shelling Wednesday of a U.N. school in the Gaza Strip that was sheltering Palestinians displaced by the fighting between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.
The U.S. didn’t assign responsibility for the shelling, but Gaza officials say Israel struck the school, killing 15 and wounding 90. Israeli’s military said it fired back after soldiers were targeted by mortar rounds launched from the vicinity of the school.
White House spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan also said the U.S. is “extremely concerned” that thousands of Palestinians aren’t safe in U.N.-designated shelters, despite being told by Israel’s military to leave their homes. Israel has been warned civilians by phone and leaflet to leave dangerous areas ahead of strikes on militant targets.
To be sure, civilian casualties in a war zone are an unfortunate side-effect of conflicts like this, but as the release notes, Israel has been making every reasonable effort it can to avoid harming bystanders. Meanwhile, Hamas has been hiding weapons in a variety of places, and they have a history of using innocents to shield their activities. The Blaze has an excellent rundown of some of the worst examples of these acts. While the AP report does go on to say that the Obama administration condemns these kinds of acts, these condemnations always seem to be qualified or conditional in some way. This President’s remarks criticizing Hamas are always timid and paired with much stronger criticisms of Israel. An eager to please media laps these statements right up, both out of their general loyalty to Obama and because it confirms their existing biases about Israel.
In a post fittingly titled “Obama Cries for Palestine”, Keith Koffler says it best:
Mr. President, this is a war. It is being fought for a reason. Like all wars, there is tragedy. Hamas is responsible for the tragedy. Rewarding Hamas for its actions will only create future tragedies. Letting Israel make clear once and for all the price of Hamas’ dirty business will prevent future tragedies.
So tell Samantha Power to stop crying at the UN, tell John Kerry to stop pissing his pants, and get yourself a serious approach to foreign policy.
And fall in behind our ally.
If Israel was the one making the conscious effort to harm civilians, then they would deserve every bit of criticism they would receive, but that is not what is happening. However, this is not the case. It is Hamas, the side that Obama only tepidly condemns, that is using them and traditionally neutral institutions to further its goals, and if some innocents happen to be killed in the process, then it makes it a lot easier for the world to blame the Israelis.
Hamas is not our ally. They do not deserve one iota of our support. They should be crushed as soon as possible. Israel is our ally, and they understand like perhaps no other country the dangers posed by radical Islam. They are the ones who should have our full support, Mr. President.
