Ken Paxton for Texas Attorney General

According to Senator Ted Cruz, “Ken Paxton is a tireless conservative warrior.” Paxton is running for Texas Attorney General. As all of us know, we may not live in Texas, but Texas affects us and we all probably secretly or not so secretly want to live there.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott frequently describes his workday as, “I go into the office, I sue the federal government and I go home.” In fact, Abbott had filed 27 cases against President Obama’s administration as of the launch of his Gubernatorial bid last year. There can be no doubt as to the significant power that the Texas Attorney General wields against federal intrusion and lawlessness. Moreover, the future leadership of Texas is now being re-shaped as Governor Perry steps down. It’s imperative that Texas have strong conservative leadership – because as Texas goes, so goes America.

As a result, it is of interest to each of us who next holds that office. It’s a race Ken Paxton needs to win.

The short story is that there are three Republican candidates running: a rich, well-funded liberal; an establishment tool; and an awesome Ted Cruz style conservative.

In describing the race, the Dallas Morning News quoted a political science professor familiar with the race as saying, “It offers the best contrast of the two different visions for the future of the Republican Party. One is a more pragmatic, centrist, conservative vision of Dan Branch; and the other is the movement conservative vision of Ken Paxton. Barry Smitherman is an establishment Republican who is trying to wear the clothing of a movement conservative.”

Every Republican in Texas wants to be seen as the “Next Ted Cruz” but in this race, only one man fits that profile: Ken Paxton. And he needs your help immediately. Early voting in Texas starts Tuesday. The Primary is on March 4, 2014. Please give him money to combat well-funded establishment opponents.

In describing Ken’s record, Sen. Ted Cruz recently said, “Ken Paxton is a tireless conservative warrior. Ken Paxton stands and fights, whether it’s against Obamacare, whether it’s fighting for voter ID, or whether it’s fighting to defend our religious liberty. And I’m proud to say Ken Paxton is my friend who fights hard in the state of Texas.” That’s why groups like Texans for Fiscal Responsibility have given Ken a lifetime conservative ranking of A+. TFR’s President, Michael Quinn Sullivan, said, “Ken Paxton has demonstrated a consistent ability to sift through large volumes of information and recognize threats to sound fiscal stewardship and the preservation of liberty.”

In their endorsement, the Young Conservatives of Texas stated, “Senator Paxton is the only candidate in the race that Texans can vote for and know with certainty that the next Attorney General will be a fierce advocate for Texas when it is necessary to take on the federal Government. Greg Abbott has built the Office of Attorney General into a last best defense for state sovereignty and Ken Paxton is the only candidate who can and will take up the reins and continue the good fight.”

These aren’t just idle words. In addition to his incredible conservative ratings and stellar legislative record, Ken is a fighter. In 2010, he challenged Joe Straus, liberal speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, in a leadership contest. He gave a voice to grassroots activists who tired of Straus’ dominion. While Texas conservatives were unsuccessful in unseating Straus, Ken proved his tenacity and willingness to damn the consequences when he knows the cause is just. By the way, Dan Branch is one of Joe Straus’ closest allies and Barry Smitherman refuses to take a position.

While Ken is traveling the state, proudly talking about his record and beliefs, both Smitherman and Branch are busy triaging their resumes and rewriting their records. The prosecutorial experience that has been a lynchpin of Smitherman’s sales pitch was discovered to be 15 months working in the Harris County DA’s office, in which time he never prosecuted a single felony. The expose went on to say, “So what would you think if I told you that in his entire 15 month career as a prosecutor, Smitherman had a grand total of 20 jury trials? Remember, he tells people that he prosecuted “countless cases” – can you count to 20? Does that sound heroic? How about his record of winning 11 of those trials and losing 9? And about all those bad people he put in jail? Well, there were five of them in total.”

As for Branch, I can’t say it better than the Houston Chronicle’s editorial board: “Consider Dan Branch, a respected GOP state representative from Dallas whose moderate positions and pragmatic approaches to governance frequently align with those of Speaker Joe Straus. Running for attorney general, Branch is portraying himself as the most conservative candidate in the race (a laughable claim), a raging anti-Obaman, a tea-party firebrand and an anti-abortion crusader. We haven’t seen such an extreme re-branding effort since the late Phyllis Diller’s plastic surgeries.”

It doesn’t matter what part of the country you live in, your life will be impacted by the actions of Texas’ next Attorney General. We need to each do all that we can to ensure that the most conservative, hardest working, Ted Cruz-style fighter wins this race. That man is Ken Paxton.
