Today, using the 50th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech as his backdrop, former President Bill Clinton called for the elimination of background checks to purchase guns.Ever since the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1994, which Bill Clinton himself signed into law, purchases of firearms in every state must go through a firearms background check that includes a search of the National Instant Check System (NICS). That system identifies quickly anyone barred from owning a gun.Today, at the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, former President Clinton said, according to the White House twitter feed:https://twitter.com/whitehouse/status/372790998864121856Considering does not even need photo identification in every state to vote, but in every state one must go through background check to buy a gun, I take this statement to mean Bill Clinton wants background checks for gun purchases eliminated.
